I also had a question, how long does it relatively take for a caique to adjust to his new home? i have read that they love to explore and play but it seems he just likes to walk around next to the sliding glass door to look outside, eat , and cuddle? he doesnt seem so interested in his toys unless he is in his cage and tremendously bored and will only play a little bit. is this mellow behavior normal for the first few wks? i know he has trouble of letting go of his baby memories b/c he coos and flutters his wings a bit when we return from somewhere or when he is sleepy so he can get cuddled. i just want to know if this behavior is normal and if he will come around and have as much energy as he should for the amounts he eats ! Thanks!

    WELCOME !!!!!!!!!

Baloo id a beautiful young boy and hes already obviously spoiled. It is great that you decided to join our little community.

Seems to me that your new one is right on track for his adjustment period. Caiques - for the most part - are very active and will play lots and lots. He is still adjusting and as his comfort and self confidence grows his personality will blossom also. Nothing to worry about at all.

Once again it is good to have you aboard. Go back thru the post on this board and read, read, read :D :D :Feel very free to post here with any questions you may have and PLEASE keep us updated on his development.

What a beautiful baby you have there - - - and welcome to our caique family. Sounds like your little guy is settling in just fine. It is an adjustment and everything is new right now but most caiques are quite curious and just need to check everything out. And there are so many new things to see and take in.

Give us updates and keep the photo's coming.

Hi Everyone, I'm a newbie too and have a four month old BH caique called Mr Kipling!

If anything I have the opposite concern with Kip.. He's absolutely fantastic and has made himself at home immediately - we watch him for hours and hours playing and flying, he's a constant source of entertainment!! My only slight worry is that he's very beaky to the point of being nippy and when he doesn't get his own way he throws the craziest toddler tantrums!! Being a caique I expected him to be beaky but I wonder if I should keep an eye on him using his beak to get his own way? I have a 7 yr old Maxi Pionus who has his behavioural traits but he seems a lot more straightforward compared to our feisty new little fella, bless him! Your experience and tips would be much appreciated.. Many thanks x

Hi Honeypi and welcome to Caique Chat. Welcome to Mr. Kipling too.

You might as well get used to the temper tantrums - they don't always disappear. And if you give them something to eat that they love and try to take it away - you will hear about it. I got some pomegranite juice and give it to my guys in a little shot glass. I go around and let them drink out of the glass. They love it and if I try to take it away too quickly or if someone tries to butt in before it is their turn, they do that little piggy squeal. I am sure you will definitely see a totally different personality with the caique.

I took in a 7 yr old pionus last summer (to find a good home for him). He was just a wonderful bird and oh so beautiful and sweet. But my house can sometimes be a mad house with 5 caiques screaming - along with the suns and amazon. I was concerned that the pionus was too mellow to be around such crazy birds, but he didn't seem to mind. In fact, when they got crazy, he would join in talking. But I wanted to find him a home where he could get a little more one on one time.

And the beakiness is just the trait of a caique. They love to rub their beak on your hand. Mine all love towels (especially damp towels) to rub on. You just need to remind them to "be gentle". One of my caiques came from a breeder who teaches them that as a baby. And if she gets a little wild in her play - I just softly remind her to "be gentle". She automatically calms down - so I know that she remembers and understands what it means.

You will enjoy your caique so much and I hope you will send pictures of both of your guys. I read the posts at Pionus Strut - do you ever post on there?
