Thinking of Possibly Rehoming my BHC- FL only

Postby Looony2nz on Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:19 am

We've had Rocky (male, BHC) whom we got from someone else 4 years ago. He is 6 yrs old. He is a handful. He is VERY loud. We have a small house and sometimes (tile floors, high ceilings) we can't even hear ourselves think. We don't have another room he can go in, so he's right there in our main living area. I think he would so benefit from a home where we aren't always trying to shut him up.
He squawks alot, doesn't talk at all, mumbles little gibberish, plays, but thats it. He can be difficult to handle at times and needs an experienced person who can appreciate him.

I am in south florida and I will not ship him; I would have to interview the person and his cage comes with him.
If you think you know someone please let me know.
I think about this on an off and have never actually posted about him.

thanks in advance.
See ya,
Shari

Poor Rocky  I hope the right home for him is nearby and quick to love that feisty boy. How is the WB you got last summer working out? Will she miss Rocky's songs?

Hi, I am so sorry that things aren't going well with Rocky. I know that many people say that their caiques are loud, but Yankee is not so I can't compare caiques. I taught him to whistle when he was young and he mostly does that when he wants me. What strategies have you tried to retrain his screaming?

I have heard that now is not a good time to try to hehome birds because so many people are giving up their birds due to the high price of maintaining them. I was reading on the breeder chat that prices and sales are way down.

I wish you both the best.

My WB baby is now 1 yr old already. (she was from Gloria @ Shady Pines) She is so different from Rocky who was adopted at age 2. She plays whistles the tunes we taught her, just different. I guess thats how it is when you have them from babies.
thanks for asking !

With Rocky, we change his location periodically to give him different scenery. He sits out on his perch, and goes in his "vacation cage" (in another room near the WB - Dory) I work, and he is more difficult to handle at times, so I am the main "handler", so its hard.

His squawking is unbearable at times. Especially at 8am when everyone in the house is up lets say like today on the weekend. We can barely talk to one another. (small house)

We'll see what happens.
Thanks for the replys.
See ya,
Shari

Boy, I sure understand! I have a WB female, age 5 and a BH male, age 4. They are caged together but mostly are not in their cage. My husband and I are at home most of the day so they are out with us. They yell sooooo loud...I just don't understand it. I don't think there is another parrot that gets this much out of cage time and attention. I believe that they yell because they are happy! They have a nap from 11:00-2:00 in their cage and then they are quite. I have to put them in there so I do not strangle them after hours of yelling. I love them very much but I too think about rehoming them on occasion! The problem is: no one would take as good of care of them as I do, so I tolerate the noise as best as I can.

I know what you mean about the screaming. I have 5 and when the amazon and sun conures join in I sometimes think my head will explode.

I notice that mine scream for different reasons. My 2 "redneck" caiques (I have lovingly nicknamed that because they came from the south) will scream if water runs in the kitchen sink or tub, if you fry something on the stove, if you krinkle the newspapers while rolling them up in their cage, so the noise must excite or annoy them. But they also just scream because they are happy and they are birds and I think they need to do it. And of course, they also do it if they are tired and its time for bed. One of my BH's changes the tone of her screech and you definitely is letting you know that she intends to be heard "NOW". But that ornery scream does get her put back in to her cage - because even tho she thinks she is the PRINCESS - she is not at that time. But she s a very independent little girl and I have to love her for who she is.

I think I will invest in a pair of ear plugs.

Love your philosophy Scootie (getting earplugs..lol) and I notice the same thing with Bailey certain noises trigger him to start sqwaking: dishwasher door being opened, the microwave beeping, pulling pots and pans out of the cabinets...squeaky cabinet doors (altho i oiled them this weekend so that eliminated that problem) and putting ice cubes in a glass! crazy bird!

Caper (13yo WBC) also has his screaming triggers. Running water was already mentioned, and he hollars loudly when he's in the shower with me, but he's definately have a great time. The vacuum sets him off every time, but then I don't like the vacuum either. He beeps like the microwave perfectly which can annoying. But then he mostly does that about 6pm every night when he wants popcorn. His contact call is mostly a beeping whistle which he learned quickly. I guess I'm lucky that he isn't as LOUD as many of your Caiques. He has his moments where he just sits and screams, but I think he's just being a Parrot. He's not annoyed at anything or unhappy - he just feels like screaming. Some days, I wish I could also scream like that - LOL!! (But then the neighbor's would call the Police). When he's screaming like that, I normally just laugh at him. He will either look at me totally annoyed, or starts laughing back at me which is a hoot.
