People acclimation?

Postby Freddy on Sat Jul 26, 2008 7:50 pm

So my sister in law is in for a visit. Cisco immediately heard the new voice downstairs and got riled up. Started doin the head bob and his eyes were pinning but good. I let him out of his cage and he jumped to the floor and ran down the hall. He stood on top of the landing and listened to my wife and her sister talk for about half a min and then did a peter pan off the landing and down the stairs. He then jumped from the lower landing to the table where they were sitting. He ran to the middle of the table and did this velociraptor sounding scream. Not real loud but kind of menacing sounding. He had fire in his eyes and I know that sis would have got nailed if she hadn't wisely vacated the area.

I think that Cisco feels it is his job to protect the flock. But I would really like to get him at least to the point that he does not want to kill the company, LOL. Any advice to acclimating the birds to company?

I remember you telling me that you thought female caiques are testy or something to that affect.... LOL Seems like Karma has come to haunt your words, Just kidding !!! Cookie is doing well and she only attacks my dogs and cats thank GOD. We had my sis in law come over with her kids and she was sweet. Sat on their hand and shoulder for a minute ( they aren't really bird people) so I didn't want to push it. I am sure someone will help with the aggression towards visitors. Probably tell you to read the Sally Caique book. I think it' s the caique bible from what I hear, haven't read it yet though. Probably very interesting to read about all kinds of caique questions and behaviors!! Good luck---Nanc and Cookie 8)

Nance

Good to hear from you. Glad things are going well with you and Cookie. Yeah karma can be a bitch sometimes :) :) .
I guess maybe we should be glad that he loves us so much that he feels protective (or maybe thats not it at all). Crazy birds

Geez Freddy...wish I knew what to tell you. Just curious how old is Cisco? Bailey just turned 1. and so far he still likes everybody. What i do..do, is everytime we get company I take Bailey out of his cage and let the company meet him and hold him if they'd like. We usually sit at our kitchen table and let Bailey walk around on it and go to the person of his choosing. He ususally ends up going to everyone.
Hope things get better with Cisco..I think he is protecting you..in his way

I'm sorry, Freddy. I can't help you. My family has taken to calling Yankee, "Devil Bird." He jumped off of his playstand recently onto my father and bit the heck out of his neck. There was no warning and Dad was just walking by his cage to get to the couch!

I can't even let him out of his cage when anyone is here! Yankee just turned 2 and is not agressive with me, but look out if he sees anyone else! I wish that I could convince him that people aren't the enemy, but I don't have much hope! He especially hates men.

Yeah Cathy

I could easily sub Cisco's name for Yankee's and the story would be the same. My family was tolerated to the extent of non bloody bites but my wifes family has been subject to the full devil bird treatment. He is just so good with us it just seems strange when they cant stand others.

Maybe you're guys are just going through that "terrible two" stage you read about?? I know some people who have older caiques and said that their caiques definetly went through this stage when they were around two, but it did pass. I'm not looking forward to Bailey becoming a "biting devil" but sounds like a good probability. Like I stated in the previous post he's such a sweetie now, it must be tough when they just change like that.

I have the same problem with Lola. Before I moved out of my parents house, Lola was out on her playgym one day. My older brother came for a visit. Well, he stood in front of her playgym too long and she took the opportunity to jump on him and bite the back of his neck and ear. It wasn't pretty. So since that day my bro doesnt go near Lola when she's out. My other bro who lives with us is great with Lola. I'm assuming since my bro doesnt live at home, Lola thinks of him as an intruder.

Now, since we have moved into our new place, we had my bachelorette party at the house. Lola was out before people started to arrive, once one of the girls got there, Lola seemed REALLY interested in her, but I didnt let her get anywhere near my friend. I put her back once people started to arrive. I find she gets aggitated when there's a lot of action in the house. The best place for her is in her cage.

When I got her at 2 1/2 months up to about a year she'd go to ANYONE and I wouldnt have to worry. But now she only goes to peole she knows. I keep her on a VERY short leash.

PS. Since We've moved her lunge biting has been pretty much non existent! horray!!

It is tough when they change. I wish lola could have stayed at 2 and 1/2 months old forever!
I was absolutley horrified the 1st time she lunge bit at me.. gave me a fat bloody lip. I felt seperated from her for awhile. You learn to deal and cope with their moods and figure out what triggers it. It's not easy, but not impossible.

Gosh, I hate to say this but you have a typical caique. There wasn't any place I didn't take Beaker, from the the time I got him at 5 months, up to about 2 years old, but the laws of the universe or some other 'transformation' took place shortly after that, and I can only trust him with a few people now. Unfortunately, Beaker is also a typical caique but that's ok. I knew this aspect of his species wasn't unknown or unexpected, though I had hoped for an exception. LOLOL You'll just have to go with the flow Freddy. It isn't just a protection thing, they just decide if someone is 'acceptable' or not and that's it! Some of it can be jealousy as well, but you'll not likely change him in any way, with this person, sorry.
I used to take Beaker to work with me and he would literally get off his playstand and go into the next cube where a friend worked, just to try to attack her. It was embarrassing but she was understanding and I just make sure he's in his cage when she comes by my house for a visit. It's less stressful for him (and will be for Cisco), as well as for you and your relative.

I just want to say how great it is that we can share our lives with our caiques and get some "heads up" to their possible behaviors.

Andrea said it right

I knew this aspect of his species wasn't unknown or unexpected, though I had hoped for an exceptiont:

Altho all caiques have their own personalities it's so valuable to know what to expect with each species that way you can be prepared. That is why I mentioned the phase of the "two years"..as I've read and heard so much about it from other caique owners.

And it's true, there are some things caiques will do because "that's what they do" so we as their owners like Andrea need to adjust to their needs and understand them.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all of your responses. At age 1 1/2 our boy is everything we desired in a Caique. He is so special and just loves his mom and dad lots. His personality is awesome and his little quirks make us laugh daily. He is truley a joy and I have never regretted the decision to bring him in to our family. If this is the only "obstacle we face with him I will consider us lucky - I just wish he would let others see what a special little guy he is. Oh well - they will just have to hear the stories (maybe its time for a vid camera LOL).
