Has your caique ever really hurt herself?

Postby deee2 on Fri Nov 03, 2006 1:32 pm

Daisy is so much more adventurous than our senegal, that I worry she is going to hurt herself! She gets so noisy about things that she goes to investigate and sometimes falls, then favors her wing for a few minutes. Our senegal is not so ambitious, and he can be trusted to stay on his play grounds..... but my goodness, Daisy just up and takes of whenever she gets the notion. I see I have to be much more careful with her and electrical wires, etc.

I love this silly bird so much! She's on my shoulder helping me type dispite the fact she's removed two keys so far. I did manage to put them back on.

I keep saying that it will be a miracle if Jamie doesn't break something. SHe is like Daisy - she plays so hard she sometimes falls off, she often crashes into the microwave when landing on the counter and she jumps to places and lands so hard! But she just shakes it off and climbs back up to play.

You definitely have to monitor her way more than your Senegal. I can't really take my eyes off Jamie because she gets into trouble so fast! But I think that caiques have a much better pet potential than Senegals... (I love my Senegal dearly but Jamie is just something else).

Oh, I have to agree Kate. For one thing, my senegal bonded with my hubby and only tolerates me, caiques don't bond 'as' strongly to one person. But also, they're just so much more energetic and funny and cuddly! I love how she rolls over on her back to let me tickle her.

ha ha.. luckily Lola has never really hurt herself, but they are the most inquisitive little creatures!!!! She'd would be the one to hurt herself if she wasn't properly looked after!! Caiques are just natural born explorers which is what could get them into serious trouble!

When Lola was 3 months old.. I had her home for a week. She managed to get out of her cage when NO ONE was home!! She walked around the downstairs of the house...we followed a trail of destruction...she knocked some things down. LOL My mom found her sitting behind the verticle blinds of the sliding door! She was probably out for a few hours...we dont know. But to think what could have happened makes me shiver!! But when my mom found her, Lola JUMPED into her arms as if she was saying THANK GOD someone is home!!!

But sometimes she tries to jump onto things and misses and crashes, she'll fall off the table inthe kitchen if shes playing too hard. She doesnt realize that there's an edge and she can fall off! 99% of the time she gets caught! lol But there's definite potential for caiques to hurt themselves!!!
Little psychos they are!! lol

    Clumsy Caique

Postby Cathy on Sat Nov 04, 2006 8:25 pm

I thought that it was just that Yankee is still a baby that caused him to be so clumsy. He falls off the top of his sleepy hut and then looks at me like it was my fault!

You will hear a lot about how acrobatic they are, you will also hear how fearless they are. You will not hear how graceful they are.
Scares the crap outta me when I see Scooby hanging from 1 toe nail flapping her wing so the toy sways and spins. Thats what they do. The first couple of times I went right over and made sure she was ok. I didnt think that was such a good habit to get into.
Yes she has fallen and gone thump. Does not seem to slow her down at all. Now all I do is ask if she is all right and go back to what ever I was doing at the time. So far it has not fazed her in the slightest.

Last time I seen it she fell in her pellet dish

    Then yelled at me.

    Silly bird

I know sometimes Lola will be preening herself and she'll bite herself by accident, then she'll turn and bite me like I was the one that hurt her and I wasnt even touching her! What the heck?! ha ha Crazy birds!!!

Dweezel is no exception to the Caique non-gracefulness. When he gets into his "fighting matches" with one of his toys, he will sometimes lose grip and fall. Like everyone else, I was worried at first but when he got back up and said "What?" I knew he was alright. Sometimes he falls from the very top of the cage and then smacks every branch on the way down. We also noticed that when he flys and lands, he does not calculate his landing. He pulls in his wings, throws out his feet and falls to where he wants to go. It was the wierdest thing to watch when he first did it. I thought it was because he had he wings clipped for so long that he didn't know how to land, but he still does it after 1 1/2 years.
