Zorro laid an egg!

Postby brimonster on Fri Feb 08, 2008 10:15 am

Zorro laid her first egg yesterday or the day before! She had buried it so I didn't even know it was there until last night! I highly doubt it is fertile, but she is incubating now, so at least she is getting into the nesting mode. She is still as sweet as pie, Dweezel has been being more aggressive (got bit a few times this week and last week). But he is still sweet while in the nest box!

The two kids look very proud !!!!!! Yay for them!!!! Hope you are boning up on your chick rearing - wont be long before a fertile egg comes around. Good luck.

Oh Briana, I am so excited for you and and Zorro. I have heard that it is very noticable when they are about to lay an egg as their little bottom area really protruded like a pregnant woman. They look so cute in their nest box. I have always heard that pet caiques that have been put in a breeding situation but still kept being treated as pets are quite nice and not as fearful as caiques who are strickly breeders and not handled as our pets are. I hope that they can continue to be fun and playful even tho they are bonded to each other.

You know - - - - - if they do have babies and you hand feed them it will be very hard to give them up and send them off to new homes.

Give those little cuties a birdie kiss or little treat for me.

Freddy- I breed Lovebirds and I have handfed birds from Budgies to Macaws, so I should be ready for anything ;) I am just hoping that if they do end up having fertile eggs, they will feed them at least for the first 2 weeks, though I know many Caiques do not feed their babies unfortunately. I will give them a chance (I will not pull eggs to incubate or automatically pull babies as soon as they hatch) unless they prove to be egg breakers, or baby killers. I am hoping that with Dweezel's feeding instinct (he loves to feed the baby Lovebirds) and Zorro's mommy instinct, all will be ok.

Scootie- I know what you mean! I am 100% sure that if they do ever have babies, I will be keeping the first one. I do have one person kind of on a waiting list for a baby, but she knows that they may never have any. So far, Zorro has kept her sweet demeanor but Dweezel has attacked me a couple of times. He is very protective of the nestbox now, but he has his sweet moments. The only problem with them being tame is that they are not afraid to attack! ;) I am hoping that after this season, he will still be my sweet baby. I have no worries about Zorro though, she is just a doll!

Haha, well, I did only put it up there a couple of months ago anyway, so it hasn't been there long.

They look so cute with their egg! How exciting!
I hope Dweezel goes back to normal for you once his hormones settle a bit.

They look SO cute in the nest box. How fun it would be to raise a baby caique! But you are right, giving up a baby caique would be the hardest thing!

Looking forward to updates and more pictures :-)

Actually, in that second pic, Zorro was about to bite Dweezel's feet to get him away from the eggs ;) She was getting very protective!

    EGGS!

Oh, Bri! This is so exciting!!! How many do you think that she will lay? How long before the first one hatches, if it's fertile?
