new baby?

Postby Cathy on Sun Oct 22, 2006 8:34 pm

Hi, I have contacted Tammy at DJ Feathers Aviary in northern Virginia. I am so impressed with her website and in talking to her. I think that I am going to buy a BH Caique from her. Have any of you ever heard of this aviary? The cost of a male, hand-fed baby is $700 and that seems to be the going rate.

This is the first time I have posted, but I am well aware of DJ Feathers. While I do not own a caique, their website impressed me also. That is the aviary I am planning on buying a white bellied caique from once I am ready for a new addition. They seem like a wonderful place, and the free flight suit training is an added bonus even if you do not plan on using one. The bird will take a harness better if it has been trained for a similar item, and the bird will be used to having its wings picked up and whatnot. :) Everything about their site (especially the adorable photos) was highly impressive to me, and it seems like a great place for you to buy your baby from! Keep us posted!

DJ feathers

Postby sandy on Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:55 am

That's where we got Mika, (our 7 month old WB) Tammy is great! Her Birds are great too! Mika is wonderful. We also got Sparky and Mika's new big cage, all the bird food, some toys and lots of good advice from her. She has the birds out and interacting with people and each other a lot. She lets them fledge before clipping them so they have better balance and dexterity. She will also do flight suit training, no extra charge. And her place is wonderful to visit if you're nearby. If you have any specific questions about doing buisness with DJ feathers feel free to ask. They've be great for us. And good luck with your new BH when it comes home.

new caique

Postby Cathy on Fri Oct 27, 2006 7:26 pm

I am picking up my black-headed caique at the Atlanta airport in the morning. I was so glad to hear the positive comments. The only problem is that my son told me this evening teh NASCAR is in Atlanta this weekend and it is also supposed to rain. It's about a 5-hour round trip. I would ask my husband to go with me, but I haven't told him about my new baby, yet! I'll keep you posted. If you want to see my baby, go to the following website. He is the first baby, born June 27. I guess that makes him 4 months old, today.

baby caique

Postby Cathy on Sat Oct 28, 2006 7:23 pm

I picked up my BH baby today! NASCAR and getting lost twice not withstanding, I got him!!! It took him a little while to want to come out of his carrier and I didn't rush him, but when he did come out he just acted like he knew me. What a sweety, Tammy had put him in a small dog carrier. Her husband had drilled a hole and put a nice wood perch in the side. She mounted 2 food dishes to the door and used a fixed a large feed dish at the back. He was in absolutely great shape. I was so worried. Then, since I live in a very small town and I was in Atlanta, I went to a wonderful store called the Aviarium. I needed food and a few more toys. I found the neatest birdie gym. It cost way too much but I bought it anyway. It looks like it is made of giant tinker toys. I take some pictures tomorrow and post them.

Now, I have to decide on a name. I am thinking about Yankee because I am always getting teased about being from the North and BH caiques are found in northern South America.
Then there is Diego or Iago. Too many choices! Any suggestions?

I love the idea of the name Yankee for one of these guys.

I am glad your very cute baby came home to you safely. It sounds like you had fun in Atlanta at that store and buying the playgym. They're meant to be spoiled.

How did your husband react? I'm sure the little guy will win him over in no time at all.

:)

My husband does not like my birds. He is gone so much that all he really ever says is how many do you have now and don't ever buy any of those huge birds.

I am so bad. I didn't tell him about Yankee because he would have had a huge fit! If it doesn't play poker or have anything to do with sports on TV, it doesn't get his interest!

PROGRESS

Postby Cathy on Tue Nov 14, 2006 8:52 pm

Yankee has really become very sociable in the last 2 days. Last night, he started calling to me when I left the room. He did the same, this evening.

Also, for the first time, when I tried to put Yankee in his cage, he refused to get off of my hand, even when I turned it upside down. Did I make him go in his cage? No way!

And, he is playing with the birdie necklace that someone suggested that I wear to keep him from chewing my clothing, and he is starting to play with some of his toys!

That's great that he like the birdie necklace I suggested! I had hoped that he would.

Congratulations on your progress! It sounds like little Yankee is one happy fid!
