scary experience today

Postby sweetpeaches on Tue Jan 01, 2008 8:58 pm

whew..what a day..i took bailey to get his nails trimmed. well when the girl was done she said to me keep an eye on his back toe nails he may bleed. 2 hours after the trim his one back toe nail started to bleed...all over the place. bailey was sitting on my slipper and i looked down and saw blood..on my slipper, sock, bailey....it frightened me. i immediatley remembered to put cornstarch/flour on it . but it kept bleeding so i went on the web and read that to rub a bar of soap against it. i did that also. it helped for a couple of hours.then it started to bleed again, so i went to the drug store and bought a styptic stick and applied that. that was a few hours ago. i covered his cage and now he's sleeping on his perch. i put some white paper towels on the bottom of his cage and thankfully no blood so far. i think that maybe his playing and moving around the cage kept opening up the wound. i will be sleeping by his cage tonite and checking to see if there's anymore bleeding. what a nerve racking day!
i learned alot tho...1. always have an emergency kit/plan ready 2. always have your avian vet number nearby! and thank God for forums where people can give you advice and support.

Terrible! Thank goodness you kept your cool and did what needed to be done. Sleeping by his cage is a good idea. I surely hope Bailey's fine now and the horror is history. I have my vet use a dremel on nails and take little enough to avoid any blood. It's hard though. Very sorry for what you've been through today.

aww I'm sure he'll be alright. Bleeding is always very frightening though.

In a pinch, cornstarch can work quite well with clotting as well.

Oh how scarey - - I always tell them not to take off TOO MUCH. I don't want them to bleed and also if they do it too short, they seem to have a harder time perching and hanging on. When I do them myself I just take off the tips.

I hope Bailey is fine now, he probably wasn't stressed as much as you. I know we don't like to think of anything hurting our babies.

Give him an extra kiss for me.

thanks! he is better...however i noticed he's holding that foot up more than before..it's probably sore? yes, he was much more calm about it than i was. i did call the girl who cut them and she felt very bad. so i'm sure "if" she cuts them again, she'll be more careful.

ohh thats too bad!

how scary that must have been for you. Next time you may want to take her to a bird store/vet where they cauterize the nails instead of clip them. When they cauterize the nails it seals the quick so it wont bleed. You can also purchase cauterizing tools yourself but i wouldn't reccomend using them on your own bird because she could end up hating you for it.

Its too bad that you had to go through that for a simple nail trimming procedure.

It's certainly beneficial to give it a try. I let the vet dremel mine, and I do some bleeding in between trims when those sharp nails suddenly tighten on my arm. Many people have good luck and that's so much easier for them and their birds. Try with great care. Then try again and again. Don't take chances. Just go tiny steps that build trust so that next time is a little easier.
