Caique Weight

Postby LaurelG on Thu Oct 18, 2007 8:08 am

Hi All,

How much do your caiques weigh? I was shocked to find out that Brady is a whopping 177 grams! I know BH's are typically smaller than WB's (Brady is a WB), but I thought WB's were supposed to range between 155-165 grams (I can't remember where I read that). I don't think Brady is fat... I just think he's BIG! I've noticed that he seems to be a little bigger than the other WB's I see. Just curious!

Thanks,
Laurel

My 7 year old BHC is 165 grams. This has been steady for years.

Sparky was about 187g last time we weighted him. He is a big boy, not fat just a giant with a huge head and lots of muscles. Mika was about 170g. They are both fully flighted WBs. Flying matters. Before her wings grew back and she developed her flight muscles Mika was holding at about 160g. I wouldn't be suprised if she is a bit heavier now.

Thanks! Maybe Brady isn't as heavy as I thought he was! :) He is fully flighted, but doesn't choose to fly a whole lot.

    Caique Weight

I have 2 caiques, one who is quite handicapped and stunted and she weighs 120 grams on a good day, and the other, a big male, who weighed 185 when he came to me. I believe the range is about 130-180, but like humans, each bird varies, and weights can be outside of the range.

I feel that it depends on their physical makeup, what you know they eat, their activity level and access to activity. Hm...sounds as if I'm talking about us non-feathered critters...

Louie weighs in at a consistant 128g over the past two months. Louie is very young, unflighted since his first clipping, and hasn't had his first molt. He is actively practicing for those flight feathers.
    Just another input for comparison.

Daisy weighs in at 157 grams, and she's 16 months old.

And yes, I still adore the silly little thing!

    Hey All

At what age do these kids reach their full weight? Cisco gained 8 grams after he came to live with us and is holding at a steady 140. Wonder if he will get much heavier?

Sparky is 3 1/2 and I don't think he really topped out until about a year ago. His weight continues to change wth the season and his activity level. Mika is 1 1/2 and probably not at her full weight yet. Her coordination is still improving. It's not something we notice oftern but every once in a while it is evident that she is just a bit more awkward than Sparky in doing something. Then again it could just be individual variation too. She is a much more dexterous flier than he is. The other day she actually flew threw a banister, between the uprigh spindles.
