Bath Time

Postby KentV on Sun Oct 07, 2007 1:51 am

I take my BHC into the shower once a week. Is that enough?

Does he need three or four a week?

Also, what's that "Bowl" I see people using? Do they take their own baths? I don't think my little guy would dip himself, all by himself.

Advice please. thx

Hey Kent

My Cisco wants a bath EVERY day. He either takes a shower with me or gets in the sink under tepid running water. He bathes differently in each place. In the shower he hangs out and sings and whistles and laughs while the warm mist gets him wet. He is way more business like under the faucet. He dips his head in and out of the water and flaps like crazy - he wets up the whole bathroom!!!!! I dont know if they need to bathe more than a couple times a week but I do know that my boy loves it and his feathers look great!!!

Afterwards I am required to hold his towel while he perches on my shoulder and surfs himself dry - he looks at me like Im nuts if I dont have his towel at the ready

I have always provided bowl baths to my birds. I use it as a bonding playtime. I would take my CAG into the shower as he didn't care for the bowl and was a bird who would enjoy the shower AFTER HE WAS THERE.
Caiques love to play sooo much  that they really seem to enjoy the table time.
The only real key is to find a stable bowl that is food safe (not painted with lead based paints) and is a good size. Earlier I posted on Louie's bath with pictures...the bowl I use is fairly large across yet not very high. I fill it to almost the brim, and add toys to tempt the curious    and with an uplifted voice we just play for a good bit of time...enough for Louie to learn that the bath is a fun thing :D
For Louie the first session won him over. I used the same bowl, but a smaller size, and he was drenched beak to tail by the time we wrapped up. For the second bath I changed to the super-sized bowl so he had more room to romp in the water...I believe caiques are naturals for bathing...whether under a kitchen faucet, in a sink, in the shower, or in a bowl they all seem to find a way to enjoy themselves.
Personally I prefer the table because Louie is a 8) daredevil and will flip and swirl at a moment's notice. I am leary that he would slip on his grip and possibly hit a hard shower floor since he's still so young. Plus on the table I get to take pictures and play with him.
One of the best things is after bathtime I get to sit in my rocker with Louie snuggled under a mini towel, and he gets cuddle-dried.
Yeah, I'm one of the ones who just loves the smell of caique feathers :? AHHHHHH. Then after the bath Louie gets the great softy feathers and I think he reacts :?   with the satisfied ONE EYE dazed/contented look much more during the next few days while his feathers are soo soft.
I have set aside weekends as our bath-playtime, but now that my husband will be returning to the nest we will be making another plan - right now I will be planning on a weekly bath, but as long as it is before 1PM and the time is right---Louie is in the mood :P , any day it good. Personally I do believe you should provide a bathing experience at least weekly with special times added for molting.
Anyway, hope this helps and you give tabletop bathtimes a try.

Jujube doesn't like bath that much. My husband usually take her in the shower. When she is soaking wet, he will put her close to his chest and coddle. Shower doesn't clean her as good as bath her in the sink so he will bath her once or twice a month.

On the sunny/warm day when I watered plants outside, I would mist the stand Jujube was on and she would walk over and got drenched!

Sparky loves baths. He often gets two per day and sometimes more. He loves to rub on wet washcloth, but will also bath himself in a water bowl.

Mika is pickier. She will rub on a dry towl when Sparky gets his baths but about once a week she wants to jump under the faucet and get completely soaked.

So I guess it depends on the bird.
