Menstruation and Biting Behavior?

Postby hjmaron on Tue Sep 04, 2007 10:20 am

A few weeks ago I wrote about my 2 year old BH Marco who bit me - for no apparent reason, to me anyways. I know the subsequent bites were probably due to my fear following the first one. However, I'm wondering if something else is going on, too...
The first bite was about a month ago towards the end of my monthly cycle. After the subsequent bites (with the help of this forum and the great SB book) I returned to my confident handling ways and redeveloped a good relationship with my little guy (the shoulder is still off limits, though.) Anyway, yesterday again...for no apparent reason Marco ran over, lunged at my hand and bit me. I was dumbfounded! I was feeling calm and confident about his approach and was shocked when I got chomped. I went to the bathroom to clean off my hand and while I was there used the facilities...and my period had just started. I didn't know...could he have sensed something?
Maybe I'm totally off base...but could there be anything about my change in body chemistry that set off my 2 year old (today is his b-day) baby?

Oh, wow. That would really make sense. Our bodies emit very strong pheromones what we cannot consciously detect, but animals can. That would really make sense to me.

When bird chats first got started a decade or so ago, I saw a lot of posts about this, but rarely do anymore. Sally Blanchard says something about plucking that probably holds true for biting too. She says if you do all kinds of things to stop your bird's plucking, including standing on your head -- and your bird DOES stop plucking, it's not reasonable to assume that standing on your head did the trick

When you live with a sexually mature bird, especially a male, and you're having monthly periods, it's not surprising that you will get bitten during your period. It would be surprising if you don't get bitten any other time! But I suspect that will prove not to be the case.

I think our birds know when we're anxious, in pain, or irritable. And often periods will have us feeling those things. But other things can as well -- job stress, financial or relationship problems, miserable heat and a broken AC! Some say their birds get sweeter when mom is stressed. I usually find that mine get a little testy, like my anxiety unnerves them. Long way of saying that I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection between your periods and your bird's biting, but I suspect it is a much less significant connection than it might at first appear.
