caique-isms

Postby sandy on Mon Sep 11, 2006 8:39 am

Just wondering if any of your caiques do this: Sparky has started tap dancing. He'll stand in one spot and run in place real fast. he only does this when he's on the floor or a counter and all you hear is 'tap-tap-tap-tap-tap' Sometimes he does it just before he runs and jumps on Mika and they start wrestling (kind of like winding up LOL), sometimes he does it to get my attension when he's about to do something he knows he shouldn't. LOL and my favorite is when I have the door to the kitchen closed and he wants out. He flys to the floor near the door and when I tell him 'no, go play' he takes one or two real steps then 'tap dances' to make me think he's gone further away. What a goof!

That is so funny!!!

Jamie does not do that but she does hop on one spot - sometimes doing a 360 degree turn in a few hops LOL.

That is so cute! I love how he trys to trick you. They sure are clever birds.

No tap dancing here - just regular ol' hopping. Taco did start hopping in his tent recently. I'll sit on the couch and I hear him in his tent hopping up and down.

Lola doesnt do that but she dances to music.... just a few minutes ago, a good song came on the radio, and I went in the living room to turn it up and I was kind of moving to the beat and I hear lola kind of clucking and I look up and shes dancing away... (bobs her head)... it was really funny. and the other night we were in the kitchen and the song "Low Rider" came on and I started to bob my head and sing and Lola stopped what she was doing and started to get down and funky... it was too funny... then she usually giggles b/c I'm laughing trying not to pee my pants! lol

Is it strange that my BHC doesnt really hop??? It seems like everyone's hops alot but mine. She usually only hops on the kitchen table when she's feisty and in a wrestling mood!

That's interesting to hear. I was so afraid that my caique will not hop. Well... she pretty much hops all the time! But she definitely loves hopping on hard sufraces because of the sound. I have encouraged her from the first day - and now I can just say "hop, hop, hop" or give her a hand cue and she starts to hop. She even tries to say "hop, hop, hop" when she does it :-)

Dweezel usually only hops when he is on the back of the couch. We encouraged the hopping from day one but he wouldn't do it for anything but Koolaid! Eventually he started hopping on the couch and now he will sometimes hop when he is on the floor with a toy. We actually taught him to fetch but he only does it when he's in the mood.

Taco doesn't hop very often, but I find it hilarious when he does! he reseres hopping for sunny afternoons on the hardwood floor with me and then sometimes he hops in his tent in his cage (it has a hard enough bottom that he makes a little noise). I try to get him to hop more, but he only does it when he wants to be extra cute and a pistachio!

hopping

Postby Cathy on Mon Nov 20, 2006 10:23 am

Yankee has just started to hop. It is just too cute.

I hope that the breeder did not trim his wings before he was flighted because he sure is clumsy. He can't fly 18 inches without dropping with a big plop. He is just starting to play with the toys in his new cage and it is so much fun to watch.

I went a bird fair and bought him a BUNCH of stuff including a new cage but I couldn't find a tent. Does anyone have a site for a tent?

Here is a link to a great play tent for the counter or top of his cage. I personally don't like leaving the tents inside the cage because of the danger. This size would probably be too big for sleeping but it sure is great for playing. I put a piece of fleece on the bottom and Jamie rolls around with the fleece (and a ball or a foot toy). Her favourite game is to play catch (or I should say me to play catch) - she loves to throw a ball from the tent all the way across the room. She also dives in when I throw the ball back into the tent. She even learned how to throw a plastic golf ball (without holes) with her foot! She lays down on her side, puts her foot behind the ball, she balances the ball on her foot and then throws it over her head! It is so much fun - I really recommend this tent. I have to laugh every time we play - at least a couple of times a day :-)

tent

Postby Cathy on Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:25 pm

Thanks so much. That is just what I wanted for play. Yankee has enough stuff in his cage. Since my boys are grown and I don't have any grandchildren, I am into bird toys!

tent size

Postby Cathy on Mon Nov 20, 2006 12:29 pm

Kate, I just went to the site. The tent is just what I was looking for. Do you have the medium size? Thanks

Hi Cathy,

I think I have the medium one - but I will measure it tonight and let you know :-)

Cathy,
I can say for sure that Tammy at DJ Feathers let Yankee fly before clipping him. We live about 20 minutes away and visited Mika there a bunch. We still stop by a few times a month for food and toys and there are always babies in various stages of growing and learning. She doesn't clip them until they can fly well enough to start visiting other cages at will. Mika flew about 20 feet back to her sisters on one visit and that is what earned her a clipping. Tammy was very fast and gentle about it. All Mika knew was that she suddenly couldn't get around as well. She was a bit upset and still tries to fly with very akward results. She has had some pretty spectacular thuds because she still thinks she can fly. Sparky on the otherhand, is probably self taught. He sounds like a helicopter every time he takes off, but his skills are improving, maybe Mika will be able to teach him a thing or two when her flights grow back. :)
