Ok - so when should I......

Postby Freddy on Sun Jun 17, 2007 8:07 pm

The boy is definitly ready for a bath. Hes been having loads of fun these last couple of days and is starting to smell a little amazonish. (not a bad smell by any means - I will always smell him, I like it, - just birdy) At what age did you guys start with your fids baths or better yet when did they show interest in water for bathing? I dont want to force the issue. Any suggestions?

I was going to pick up a shower perch but I dont want to scare him either. He is a very cautious bird and is always seeking his safety net (us) while he explores new things.

Freddie...I am a prior parront to a BH caique and found she absolutely LOVED to bathe and shower. I did not delay in introducing her to water. I would just suggest two things: (1) start with a bowl of water on a towel covered table and include a few assorted toys around. I had a small perch stand which I always had on the table bath set ups so she could get up on a perch and really give a great shake. I also included several colorful beads or acrylic toys which she could play "go fishing" with inside the bowl...(2) Always bathe or shower in the AM to allow plenty of time for your fid to fully dry before retiring in the evening!!!!

Please make absolutely sure you have a prepared camera ready because my caique would display the best "I'm the queen bird" strut after she got drenched and you won't want to miss any Kodak moments.

After showers my caique loved to cuddle under a small dry washcloth, against my shoulder area, and I could literally rock her to sleep as I did the baby burping pat over my snuggled in fid.

Have fun Freddy :D

Hi Freddy

Beaker has always hated showers, leaf bathing or misting. You name it, he hates it. He will however, get himself totally drenched in his water bowl. When I see he's getting ready to take the plunge, I just make sure the bowl is full to the top and he's good to go.

Sparky and Mika have totally different bathing styles:

Sparky wants nothing to do with getting wet in a sink or shower but loves to rub on a wet wash cloth as long as he only has to get as wet as he wants! He also used to like being misted with a water bottle. It was hilarious; he'd jump around the counter whistling up a storm while we chased him with the water bottle. The only time he gets really wet, though, is when he dives into his water bowl.

Mika is definitly my birdy when it comes to water. She loves to run under the faucet in the kitchen sink or come into the shower with me. She will also rub on a wet wash cloth but prefers it be under running water.

We didn't wait with either of them. A good soak works wonders on pin feathers. As someone else mentioned be sure to leave enough time to dry before bed, an hour or two is usually plenty. Both our birds love to rub on a dry bath towel to dry off and are at their most cuddly after a bath.

Have fun playing in the water!
