Caique and African Grey

Postby Mango on Tue Apr 03, 2007 10:05 am

Hi everyone!
I just recently purchased a baby CAIQUE named Mango who is our pride and joy! Soon I am hoping to purchase an African Grey to join our family as well. Any tips on how they might get along? Obviously not in the same cage but wondering if they will become friends??
Also a weird question. The white part around my caiques eyes sometimes turns a pink color and then back to white. Any idea why she does that??

Did you get your caique from a breeder? I would check with them about the eye coloring. The skin area on some species will turn pink or red when they're happy, but I've never heard of that with a caique.
I wouldn't wait too long to bring the grey home. It's possible they might 'grow up' together, so to speak, but I wouldn't count on it. Caiques can become very aggressive to other birds, even if they were raised together.

My BH Caique likes big birds and small birds, but nothing inbetween. He likes the lovebirds and liked a female Ekkie, a female U2 and was quite happy to meet a male YN Amazon.
Your Caique may or may not like an African Grey. Caiques can get really jealous since they are so active and love human company. The Caique might also play rather rough with an African Grey and get hurt from trying to play and the Grey not wanting to play so rough.
I agree, you may want to get the grey fairly soon if you would like them to be buddies.
On another forum site, I had someone ask me about how to get her BH Caique and Hawkhead to get along. Her Caique is just a male baby and the Hawkhead is a full grown female. The Caique likes to fly to the Hawkhead and take chunks of feathers from her tail and rump. It all depends on the individual bird.

After having just one caique, I can't imagine getting another fid, not that I think that you shouldn't, but my caique wants to be with me whenever I am home and he DOES NOT like any other birds! Yankee takes so much time, which I am happy to give, but I just couldn't find time to spend with another parrot, I am pretty sure that he would scream in jealousy most of the time I tried to spend with another fid.

I'm sort of like you Cathy. I got Daisy because my senegal bonded with my hubby, and I was left out. I adore Daisy and she adores me, so now we're well rounded. Sometimes I still feel guilty that Murphy wants to be held, and I just can't. I have too many scars to trust him. I can't imagine sharing my time with Daisy with another one, though we've always wanted a grey also. We are going to pass. Daisy is SO fun and entertaining.

The light colored skin arouns Sparky's eyes and around his nares sometimes flushes to pink if he is really happy or really excited or just playing hard. I can't tell on Mika because she has a lot of darker coloration to her skin, looks almost like she's wearing eyeshadow.
