Can you guys help me ~

Postby Scootie on Fri Feb 16, 2007 9:31 am

I have a very strange request but have some concerns about one of my caiques. I have noticed that when she does her morning poop, well actually all of them, her cloaca extends down out of her vent while she is empting it. I happened to notice this because my 2 white bellies always wait for me to take them out of their cage in the morning before they will do the big morning poop. Sassy was on the door of her cage and I was picking something off the floor and happened to look up. It appears that it extends down about a 1/2 inch out of her body. I have tried watching the other birds and don't notice that happening.

I asked a friend of mine with birds but she said that is normal. I am going to call someone else and probably the vet. She seems just fine except for that but it worries me. She will be 7 yrs old this month and sexually mature now so I don't know if this is something normal during breeding season possibly.

Thanks for your help.

  • Cloacal prolapse?

Postby Kate on Fri Feb 16, 2007 9:45 am

    Hi Linda,

It's definitely not normal. Sassy could have a cloacal prolapse. I have seen birds with that problem and it's pretty much what you described (though I think that when it gets bad, it just stays out).

I believe that an Operation can be done. But a few weeks ago, someone gave me a link to a really interesting article for treating this problem successfully using natural remedies:

    http://www.holisticbirds.com/HBN01/augs ... olapse.htm

If I were you, I would definitely take her to the vet to figure out what the problem is.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I printed the article to ad to my collection and keep for reference.

Hers is not like that picture at all. But it does extend out just a little as she poops, and then it goes right back up. But I think it needs to be checked out.

Better to be safe then sorry. Maybe it's something that can be fixed before it gets to be a big problem.

    Linda,
I would definitely have her looked at. While it goes right back up, it shouldn't be coming out at all.
    Let us know, ok?

You dont need an operation for a prolapse unless the proplapse stays out. Then the tissue is in danger of drying out and dying.

What prolapses are usually associated with are infections in the GI tract that have made the muscles and tissue in the GI tract sore, swollen and painful. Gram negative bacteria, a raging yeast infection, or hormonal imbalance could be the culprit.

You said it just looks like flesh extending out of the vent- does it appear red? Does the area take on an egglike shape? Your vet will want all this information- he/she will want to know exactly how much the cloaca comes out and how often.

I have an amazon with constant prolapse problems. If you have questions, just ask.

I just talked to an avian vet and he said that that sometimes happens and he didn't think she needed to be seen. He said to keep an eye on it.

So I will give her lots of loves and attention and watch her.

    Have a good weekend guys.

Hi, just wanted to say that I notice that same thing in my female lovebirds when they are carrying eggs. Maybe your Caique is getting ready to lay? I have a female lovebird that I thought was eggbound because she would come out of the nestbox to poop, she would squat but nothing came out, but her cloaca would descend rather far. After an horrible (on my part) 2 hours, she finally laid the egg and came out to have a successful poop. I hope everything turns out fine for your little girl!

I talked to 2 different avian vets who both said it is normal and not to worry. I just keep watching her because I do worry _ - - since they can't tell us when something is wrong, we need to be very observant. They said if there is any blood in the stool to let them know and bring her in. I also worry that it may hurt.

    Thanks for asking.
