multiple birds and spring time

Postby deee2 on Thu Feb 01, 2007 3:26 pm

Hi to you with more than one bird, especially those with a caique and a senegal. Daisy is female, Murphy is male, but a Senegal. My question is this. Will he try to go after her sexually?? He seems more interested in her lately and I wasn't sure if that was why?

Thanks
Donna :) and...

He might 'harass' her as some hormones may present themselves, but I wouldn't let them be together for any length of time, especially unsupervised. A caique should always have its own cage when unsupervised.

I wouldn't give him any reason to be interested by there being anything 'nest like' around.

Both my Senegal and Caique are males so spring is horrible! My Caique will constantly try to attack the Senegal (of course they are in seperate cages and get seperate out-of-cage time). He likes to land on the Senegal cage and growl.

My caique who was just recently dna sexed as a female has been mounting the male sun conure when I am holding them. The sun conure just puts up with him. Those two are very bonded as they shared a cage until I got them. But I separated them because the caique would get very aggressive at times.

My female caique has been trying to rub against me. It is definitely breeding season to them. I just keep telling them "no butt rubs". ha ha

yes, it does seem Murphy thinks spring is here... Daisy is too young. I just didn't know if he would be 'interested' in Daisy simply because she's female, or would he still want to attack her? Ahhhhhhh, I just gotta keep them separated all the time as I have been.

    lol

He could be interested in her. I was discussing this with my avian vet before I got Jamie. She thought that because caiques and senegals are relatively similar (colours/size), they could be interested in each other. But the eggs (if any) would of course never hatch (the 2 species are too different from each other). And sometimes you see the weirdest pairs in captivity!

My Senegal and my caique both become hormonal but they are both interested in me! lol

They don't attack each other or anything but when one starts doing something sexual, the other one never responds. I always thought that was interesting.

I read in an older Bird Talk magazine about a BH Caique bonding with an opposite sex Sun Conure. I think I have mentioned this before. The pair had babies that looked like Caiques but they had (light?) colored feet and they had a spot of color in the breast (each being different, I believe). The article said that they all lived and were adopted out. I never thought that species like that could have babies but maybe it's because they are a little more similar than a Senegal/Caique...since Suns and Caiques are from the same area?.....

yup, Sparky is interested in Mika but she is too young. Poor guy! He was also strutting for a male cardinal that was out side over christmas, but seems to have settled on me as the love of his life. Mildly annoying since he wants to be on my shoulder every second of the day and night. I don't let him and this has lead to many sessions revisiting basic training. "Step up" ...."Step up"......"last chance, Step up"....remove my sweatshirt, Sparky and all, place on floor, scowl....."Step up"......

He gets the idea after a time or two but forgets again 10 minutes later.

Little Mika is just happy to eat and look out her window or play with my hair tie. She doesn't seem to understand why Sparky gets so worked up, but she runs away from him when he does.

<sigh> next year and the ones after that will be better. They really seem to like each other, hopefully that will continue.

thanks for your comments. I guess I keep hoping they'd be able to play together, and thought if he realized she was female maybe he'd like her more. lol He sure has been giving her the eye lately, and now I know it COULD be he's flirting. WHO KNOWS? I suppose I better be even more careful when they're both out.
