I know I am new here, but thought id share what going on with Tex.
Yesterday morning I noticed She wasn't chipper in the morning like she always is.
She also didn't eat anything for breakfast.
I came home from work and notice she barely ate anything all day. I tried to get her to play but she would just cuddle up next to my neck.
She will just sit in her cage on top of her birdy buddy, all fluffed up, no energy, barely any vocals.
She is eating, but just a little. if i had to make up a number, I'd say about 1/4 of normal. (she only gets Harrisons High Po)
Droppings are much more watery then normal, but not totally diarrhea.
weight is down about 8gms
I've had several birds before and i know when they finally show they are sick, they usually have been sick for 1-2 weeks. So i realized this is a serious situation. The good things were she was eating some, she is still strong, and I can tell she really really wants to be normal, but i can see she just doesn't feel well.
I decided to wait the night and take her in in the morning to the Vet. I heated her cage to 85ish degrees. next morning (actually this morning) there was not much of any change. She tried playing with a toy for a minute, then gave up and fluffed up on top of her birdy buddy again.
I called the vet and the stupid receptionist she they were booked, but she could get me in "late February". Seriously, what wrong with the veterinarian and medical fields? I got the same thing from every doctor when my wife got really sick a couple months back. If you to busy, your to busy, but don't offer and date months away for something that needs urgent attention now.
I took tex in and finally saw the doctor and 3pm
Did a poop smear and found only 25% bad bacteria. I was told that this wasn't good, but the doc wasn't sure if thats enough to cause a sick bird.
He said the next step was expensive blood test for serious organ issues.
I opted to wait a day and try antibiotics for now and if there was no improvement in 24hrs, take Tex back in for blood work.
I gave Tex his first dose already and fingers crossed, I pray she gets better asap.
I really wouldn't wish a sick pet, especially a sick bird on any one. I have several other pets but birds are just so frail and biologically temperamental (or so it seems i guess). I hope all your birds stay healthy.
