Brought Lola to the vet tonight...

Postby Michelle&Lola on Wed Dec 06, 2006 8:28 pm

She gave her a FULL physical check up and everything is pristine! Very healthy girl!
She said the feather chewing could be due to a change of seasons and shes got an itch. Her skin is beautiful on her belly says the vet. So, we'll try the antihistimine..she could have an allergy.
She also did not feel the need to do a crop flush just yet. The chewing hasnt been as bad the past 2 days. So we're going to try the antihistimine for a week and then see.

I feel better that I took her and ruled out any medical probs!

PS. They have a live in yellow headed amazon named I.V. Funny bird... only has ONE toe nail..the rest are little stubs... not sure on the story behind her. Think she was a rescue. What a vocab she has! Very cute! lol

Brought lola to the vet

Postby lilla on Wed Dec 06, 2006 9:38 pm

Hi:

I've been following your posts re Lola. I have a BH Caique female approx. 3 years old. Always been in perfect feather until this morning. Now she is down to just the black down on her tummy and legs where yesterday she was gorgeous! She has no medical probs - but she has been around my breeding caiques. I suspect hormonal. I know this is caique breeding time but wasn't prepared for my birdies lack of feathers overnight! How old is Lola btw?

That's great that she's not sick! Now you just have to figure out what's been bugging her and you can change it and all will be well.
Poor little Lola. She sure is a lovely gal.

Amazons are definately good talkers (the majority of them). It's nice that it ended up in a nice place with people who obviously love animals.
There's one story with a happy ending.

Lola is 2 1/2 years old. It was weird when she started chewing. She grew in her flight feathers and started too chew on them then started to chew on the ones right under her chin. She wasnt plucking at all...just chewing so that she looks ratty! The vet said it could be the change of the seasons and that she has an itch and that's why she prescribed the antihistimine. But def. take your little girl to the vet. It's better to be safe than sorry

I'm so glad to hear that Lola is OK. If nothing else, maybe all the extra attention will help her through whatever is causing the chewing.

Lilla, I am so sorry to hear about your caique. What a shock it must have been to wake up to a plucked pet. I hope that she is alright, too. Keep us advised.
