Molting or not?

Postby deee2 on Sun Nov 26, 2006 10:56 pm

Daisy is losing a couple feather a day lately, and it sort of worries me. She seems young for her first molt, and I didn't think they lost feathers this time of year? When did your bird have it's first molt?

Thanks!

Mika (hatch date: 3/4/06) has been getting her grown up feathers a few at a time for about 3 months. We didn't get Sparky until he was 8 months old but he was more than half way through his first molt at that time. He more or less continuously molts at a low level with a burst of new feathers in the spring and fall. I have also read that the length of time their big molts take is somewhat temperature dependent. Supposedly, if it is cooler they molt faster and if it is warm it spreads out over several months.

    Hi Donna,

    How old is Daisy now?

I think they start molting the baby feathers pretty early because Jamie's belly was snow white on her 1st birthday and it took a long time to get to that stage. It seemed like she was pretty much molting on and off all the time! lol

Thanks.... she surely must be molting as she is losing a few feathers every day now, and seems to be a bit itchy. We are SO dry here I may see about getting a humidifier. She does get almost daily baths.
