dried vegies vs. fresh/frozen

Postby Cathy on Mon Nov 13, 2006 3:53 pm

Yankee has not been eating hs fresh vegies so when I was at the Atlanta bird show this weekend I bought some really great looking dried vegetables. I got corn, peas, beans, carrots, peppers, and some others. I want to know if anyone knows if many nutrients and vitamins are lost by feeding dried vegetables rather than fresh or frozen ones.

Your bird is always going to get more nutrition from fresh food than dried/dehydrated. Try making him muffins that have small grated carrots, sweet potatos or zucchini in them. There is almost an endless list of ingredients to put in muffins that are nutritious (and your bird won't know they're in there)
Change the shape of the veggies you're leaving for him. Birds like color and texture too. Cut 'wavy' carrot slices agains the 'grain' for interest. Cut yellow or green bell peppers in small squares and julienne sweet potatos, jalapenos or anaheims. Quickly blanche or barely steam fresh green beans, then place in ice water. Once cooled, you can cut them on a diagonal for interest. Sprinkle ground up golden flax seeds on the veggies.
There are countless ways to interest him in food. You just have to be creative and patient.

Not always true...

Generally, fresh veggies do have more nutrional value than frozen-depending how long they sit in transportion, temps, etc. Sometimes frozen veggies actually have more vitamins and minerals because they are frozen at the peak of freshness. I have to be careful with Rowdy's veggies b/c we live in a rural area and sometimes the fresh produce leaves a lot to be desired. I often make him treats with organic baby food and frozen veggies. He loves it!! He will even eat green beans with a smidge of banana baby food in the mix. I think he truly believes that green beans are the devil. :). Tandy
