Supplemental Heat

Postby Tandy on Sat Nov 11, 2006 8:04 pm

Hi all. My husband and "children" are moving into a larger home and I am researching some good sources for supplemental heat for Rowdy's area. I use a heat panel on his sleeping cage, but I need to find something to use in our now huge living room where his cage and playstand will be. I have seen several heaters that might work, but I want feedback from bird people first. After all aren't we just the maintenance and maid service?:)Thanks! Tandy

NOT ANY MORE!!! I stopped a lot of the "maid service" stuff when my sons left home and my husband retired. I figured if he could sit around all day and do nothing but exactly what he wanted to do while I was/am working full time then I wasn't going to drive myself crazy cooking, cleaning, washing, and all that poop! Now, we eat out most nights, he does his wash when he has nothing else to wear, and while you can't eat off of my floors anymore, it is clean enough. I tried to get him to sell our home and move to a smaller one but he said that he wasn't moving so it "is what it is!"

I now come home from work and play with my fids and my yorkies, read, play on my computer and have a good time, too. I used to love to clean and cook but there just aren't enough hours in a day and I am too tired to do it all, so I do what I want to do in the evenings.

Sorry for the sermon, the maid thing hit a wrong note because I have done that and won't do it again!

Maid Service for My Bird Only

Postby Tandy on Sun Nov 12, 2006 11:21 am

Sorry I didn't intend to offend anyone. I don't have any human children (by choice) and my husband and I are a team. I wouldn't let it be any other way. The only one I am maid service to is my Rowdy Bird. I am about the most non-domestic woman around. Tandy

Sorry, Tandy. I grew up in a home where my mother 'WAITS" on my father hand and foot and still does to this day. I have gotten defensive because my family thinks that this is a woman's lot in life!

You didn't offend me and I am sorry to have come across so strong. Some things still hit a nerve with me especially since my mom and dad just left after a visit in which she is still his maid! My poor husband. He sometimes gets the cold treatment when they are around because I have to bend over backwards to show that we both wait on each other.

My sons are quite self-sufficient and can cook and clean with the best of them but they do more cooking than cleaning. I take pride in the fact that will never expect "maid service" from their wives.

There I go again, sorry. I'm really menopausal today,Cathy

    Hi Tandy,

Is it really that cold in your living room? Does Rowdy really need more heat? I can understand that we want the birds to be comfortable (especially at night) but birds do adjust to colder temperatures, as long as it's not extreme or a quick change of temperature. A lot of people and zoos keep birds outside...

Yeah, Lola doesnt have any heat panels... we keep our house comfy in the winter. Her playgym is near the back door which is sunny for a good part of the day, so she'll sit by the back door and soak up the sun.

About 2 years ago, our heater broke in the early morning and it got a little chilly in the house...the guy came and fixed it within hours. I do have a heat lamp for lola but she's afraid of it. So I made her some nice warm oatmeat, stuffed her with it to warm her from the inside out and she sat in the sun on her playgym.. she was warm as toast! lol She had a blast! lol

Our heat is set at 69 during the day, and goes to 62 at night. Our Avain vet says that's just FINE. You don't want more than a ten degree change in a quick amount of time.

The only time we use an APPROVED space heater, is in our RV when it gets really cold. We have heat in there, but the upper room (5th wheel) gets too warm, and we find the lower area too cold.

If you use a space heater make sure it has absolutely no teflon or other unsafe product in it. We called the manufacturer of ours to be certain.
