Male or female caique?

Postby Dancer on Thu Sep 03, 2009 3:50 pm

Is there much difference in their personalities. Im getting one in a couple of weeks time and ive met both and are adorable, although the male i can have is a bit shy, he let me lay him on his back but unlike the female one he didnt really want any interaction with me, he had a surf on my bf hair and then had loads to eat and seemed to interact with thw other birds, but i must say he was very gentle for a baby caique as he didnt bite hard at all, where the female was really playful on her back and did bite down hard. I want a male as i dont want to have the egg laying to deal with incase of egg binding etc. Will the male come out of his shell and is it possible to get a caique that doesnt want to interact with people???

    Hey

Just my opinion, I have always owned and will only own male birds. The whole egg laying and hormonal thing is something I personally do not want to deal with. I think the male you are looking at will just need a little time to come "out of his shell". He will probably be a typical male Caique and exhibit all those wonderful Caique behaviors after he learns to trust you. I have a 2 1/2 year old male and he is the delight of the household. Again, JMO but I would get the male.

    Hi:

My 2 cents worth - I have had both male and female pets and prefer females. I haven't had any issues with egg binding, egg laying, or horrible hormonal biting issues with any of the females I've kept. I have had plucking from one of my 4 year old females, but that's the extent. By far the worst bites I've experienced have been from males; however, I haven't kept back any male caique as pets so I can't really comment on their behavior. :) Don't know if this helps any, but thought I'd give you another opinion. Currently I have a 7 month old WBC female and she is truly a gem. And, we have a 3 year old BF amazon Male who is an unpredictible, ornery piece of work. He was handfed and was great up until this spring.....

I have never had a female caique, but my male, 4 year old bh caique is wonderful. When there are no other birds to interact with him, you will be his best friend and he will count on you to spend time with him EVERY day. Yankee has only bitten me twice-both times when he was molting and I hurt his feathers. He does warn me if he doesn't want to do something that I want him to do, like get out of the sink before he is finished bathing. I listen to him and watch his body language and we get along very well.

Yankee is very quiet most of the time. Instead of contact calls which can be very loud, I taught him as a baby to whistle to make contact with me. He doesn't like other people and will bite them because I live alone and he is not used to other people. He has let my 3 yorkies know that he is not to be messed with and they leave him alone. I got Yankee at 4 months and it has been pretty much a pleasure ever since. He makes a huge mess around his cage but he is a bird...

I started out as I meant to continue. I fed him fresh or frozen fruits and vegetable, pellets and some seeds. He can't wait for the almond I give him first thing every morning. He has even learned to go potty over the toilet when he drops that first bomb of the day when I get him out of his sleep cage. In fact, I say "bombs away" and he lets loose. He has an Avian Adventures Mediana cage filled with toys which he loves and has never plucked any feathers.

Just don't make the mistake of buying a bird as a "companion" for him if you want him to bond with you. Yankee doesn't have any other birds to interact with and he seems very happy with the situation. Caiques needs a lot of time out of the cage and some interaction with you. I can only handle one parrot since I work and he is the one for me.

I say go for the male. Let me know how it goes and email me if you have any questions.

    Best wishes, Cathy
