What do you think?

Postby SincereArtisan on Mon Jun 08, 2009 8:49 pm

I am thinking of getting a ferret nation cage for my Caique. It can be seen here:

I would be getting the one in the center. The floor trays are removeable, and the bar spacing is 3/4 of an inch. There are not many horizontal bars, but I would supplement that with plenty of perches to different levels of the cage. I could potentially get this cage for a very good deal, which is why I'd like to know whether or not you think it would be appropriate. The only downside I see thus far is no wire guard above where I would set the paper, but I'll be changing it daily anyway so I don't know if thats a big deal?

Hi - Personally I would prefer a flight cage if you are looking to keep the price down. Birds always prefer the highest point in their cage. I don't think that a caique would utilize the lower section of that cage. If it were a spare cage to just explore and play in it might be fun - but I would not put any of mine in that cage. I am not sure if that is bird safe wire - like a powder coated cage. But some of the flight cages are just painted wire. The problem I have found with the smaller wire too is - that caiques little toenails can be really curly - making a circular shape almost like a necklace clasp. They can get caught on the smaller wire and could get hurt in the process of getting that toe free - or you can get bitten quite badly trying to free them - that is why I did not keep a cage with smaller wire bars.

Hey

I personally do not see an issue with the cage as seen. BUT Caiques love to chew and I would really be wary of what material the bars are made of and coated with. I've read horror stories of birds ingesting plastic coating and dying horrible deaths. I'm not sure I would risk it but just be sure to do your homework if you decide to go ahead with it. Best

I have to agree with both Scootie and Freddy here. This just really isn't a suitable cage for a caique. These cages are usually painted and while they do use supposedly 'non-toxic' paint, it doesn't mean it won't flake, or even IS really non-toxic or safe. There a too many small places with these cages as well, to catch toes and curious tongues.

I had a blue head pionus that I kept in a cage like that. However it wasn't labeled a ferret cage but a cat cage. I am sure you have seen kittens in them in pet stores. I took out the shelves and added all kinds of perches, boings, hanging toys and such. I bought the stainless steel bowls that sit in a wire ring screwed to the side of the cage. Now there wasn't a rack at bottom. The cage went to the floor. There was a grate on the bottom to keep the bird out of the paper on the slide out tray. Oscar lived in that cage for 5 yrs till I had to rehome him because I was diadnosed with crohns disease and became very ill. He used every inch of that cage, from top to bottom. No rust or chipped paint. It is a folding cage too.
As far as caiques are concerned I owned one when I was younger and it used the entirs cage top to bottom, Caiques love to roll around on their backs on the bottom of their cages. As far as long curley nails are concerned they need to be clipped. Curly is to long. This cage was 4ft long, 4 ft tall and 2 feet deep. Lots of room. I got mine at a pet store. Might want to look up cat cages? Not sure.-

I've been doing some reading up for you. The cage I used and ferret cages are rust proof, however they are painted with black epoxy paint! Not good. I did see some very large flight cages that were very inexpensive.
