Breeder box

Postby Birdadette on Wed Mar 04, 2009 12:09 pm

I have a new cage for my new bird, Pippin, and it has a place where I can attach a nesting box for Pippin to sleep in OUTSIDE the cage so that I can attach a breeder box for sleeping:

These are the boxes I'm looking at:

What size opening (hole in box) in the breeder box is right for a Caique? The #WNB1 dimensions are: 11.75" L x 12.5" H x 8.75" W

Learning all I can before Pippin comes home in late April!

Hi, I am surprised no one replied to this post yet - so I will. I personally would not put a nest box on for your bird. I am sure they are a nice cozy place to be but I think it might make them more territorial. And as they get sexually mature - it triggers more hormones as they want to nest. All of my birds except the amazon, have a birdie hut and they all sleep in them. Some people do not like the huts and believe that they also trigger the hormonal issues (this is when they are adult birds, so not to worry until at least 2 yrs or so). The other concern is for safety, threads getting caught, etc. My birds have had them always and the oldest ones turned 10 years this March. When it is time to go to sleep, they go up into their little tents and sleep there. If something really scares them (like a really big noisy truck, or snow plow in the driveway) they will go up into their beds. If their light isn't on and the sun goes down and the room gets dark, they just actomatically go get in their little bed. They get to rest their little legs and I am sure that they feel safer in their little place.

Good luck with your new little caique - they are just the greatest little birds.

I must not have seen this post. I tend to agree with Scootie. I , too, do not care for breeder boxes. I bought Cisco a Choppers Flop House for a bird tent. He loves it !!!! At bed time he goes to he sleep perch and gets under the felt arms. I move it around him and then cover his cage, He will also nap there - it seems to be a "comfort" spot for him.

Hi Freddy: Is the Choppers Flop House the little tents with all the fringy things hanging down around them. They look really cute. What I like about the tents is that they really get to relax their little feet. One of my birds has a bad foot and leg and I didn't want him to have to put all the weight every nite on the good leg. They do love their little places to snuggle in at night.

Yes it is. We had a tent for Cisco but he wanted nothing to do with it. He would sleep on top of it but not in. I will give it back to him a soon as we get a larger house for him Give the spoiled boy another option . :D :D
