v.v.v urgent..... please help!

Postby phoenix_winter on Fri May 30, 2008 3:41 am

let me explain...

i have a 10 month old budgie in my room. Lastnight one of my friends was walking home from work and found a budgie sitting on the curb outside my house, it looked half dead and wasent really moving when he picked it up. knowing i hada bird he brought it round thinking it might be mine....
it wasent.
my husband...thinking it was the only option available, popped him in the cage with my budgie. when i got home they wre kinda just sitting and checking each other out.... i think the new fella had been on an almighty flight and was completly pooped out. me and my hubby was on bird watch all night. the slightest noise we went over to check it out......
its really weird as they semi seem to be getting on ok... they occationally have a little bite at each others face... but that has turned into, what seems like.. affectionate face grooming.
the bird my friend found is a definate male as his nose is the darkest blue (seems pretty old as his eyes have white rims round them)..., my bird has a very pale blue one, but i have always assumed he was a boy.

im not sure what to do... leave them together or seperate them... the only problem being is that i havent got a car for a few days and cant get hold of a spare cage, so he'd have to go in a box or something

can anyone give me some advise here as my budgie seems to be hanging upside down and preening himself/herself a hell of alot more than usual

cheers

Well you broke all the safety rules to keep your established bird safe.

You have no idea what the new bird has been exposed to. You said it looked half dead. Where is the min 30 day quarantine even if you don’t plan on getting the well bird testing done on the new guy? Without this you could be exposing your family to transferable diseases like psittacosis or avian TB, your established bird - even more. You know it is less expensive and time consuming to medicate one bird than multiple birds.

You don’t even let the birds get to know each other (AFTER the new guy comes out of quarantine). It’s not fair to dump a new bird straight into an established territory (cage). This is a great way to get fights started.

It's a bit late to shut the barn door now, the horse has fled the property. For peace of mind for you, your family, your current bird it might be wise to still have the new bird testing done. If the new bird has something, it's best to know now rather than later.

What Kerry probably means is that separating the birds now and getting the new one vetted is far safer than leaving the two together. It's possible the rescued one looked "half dead" from being outside, hungry, and thirsty. But if he's sick, the less exposure your other bird has to his illness, the less chance of infection. If you can't manage another cage, chances are slim you can manage an avian vet exam, so let's hope your husband's gamble wasn't a tragic one. It surely wasn't a wise one though.

Praying for a miracle, Paca

well the bird seems fit and healthy now... i did state that he must have been on the biggest flight ever and after a day or two of feeding he seems fine. They have stopped pecking and now they have got used to each other

kerry C.... i do realise that it was not the best thing to do just to put him in the cage with my budgie, but given the circumstances.... what else was we suppposed to do? leave him in the street to get run over? he was fully tame and my guess is hed probly been out all that day and we found him at night. i did realise the risks... but chill out man, i thort i was doing the right thing. obviously not in everyones eyes. i came on here for abit of advise ... not a full on telling off!!

anyway... the affectionate pecking and grooming of their faces has turned into what seems like they are regurgitating and feeding each other... im not quite sure whats going on???

The advice you got was to separate them to protect your own budgie. Sometimes people in your situation use a spare bathroom or room away from their other bird(s) to keep a found bird away from theirs for safety's sake.

What progress are you making finding the owner? Have you gotten "Found Bird" posters up in your neighborhood, called vets' offices and pet stores, knocked on neighbors' doors? Spreading the word quickly is the best way to get the bird back home where he belongs. If you need more advice on how to search, we're glad to help. We want what's best for him and your own bird. As you talk with people while getting the word out, you'll probably find someone who has an empty cage that you could use until the poor bird's distraught owner finds you.

Good luck and thank you for rescuing him!

I think that you should get your new budgie checked so then you will know if he has a disease or not. You should watch your budgies and see if they fight or not . if they fight you should separate them. :P
