The New Budgie Joins the family

Postby quigley on Wed Mar 05, 2008 12:11 pm

Hello Everyone,

First, I would like to say to "Charlotte" GREAT JOB!

Secondly, A fourth budgie has joined our family. I have three male budgies in one cage and am wondering if it is alright to put Matilda (the new budgie) in the cage with Quigley, Roo and Big Bird. I am not interested in breeding but if this is a bad idea I would like to know. I have had Matilda for over a month in a separate cage to make sure she is healthy. If it is ok that I add a female to the cage I plan on purchasing a larger flight cage measuring 32"Wx21"deepX62"high.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this.

If you aren't interested in breeding, so long as you don't encourage them you *SHOULDN'T* have any problems (although there are always exceptions). I have 1 male and 4 female budgies. Except for the girls picking on the boy, they all live happily together, pigging out in the food dishes....

Most people say that it's a bad idea to have more females than males (actually, I was told two of the females were males before adopting them....) but that it's fine to have more males than females... actually, it's recommended in a breeding situation...

Either way, if they all get along fine, you should be able to keep them all in the same cage. Sure, there may be bickering, but usually that's quite normal.

Thanks Monica for your thoughts on this. I definitely will not encourage breeding. I hope that they will all get along except for the normal amount of birdie bickering.
