Is My Budgie Sick?! Please HELP!

Postby DanielDHerrera on Sat Feb 16, 2008 5:58 pm

[b]Hey there, while cleaning out my birds aviary yesterday morning I noticed that my male budgie was acting different!? But I did'nt pay much attention... And well today, once I go out to get them clean I notice that he is not as playful and outgoing as he usually is, and well the day goes on and I also notice that all he does is perch, sleep, without any eating!!!!! And while his girl fly's around he pays little attention which is unlike any other time... His eye's are now very DROWZY-like, and he has gone to the bathroom in a very odd looking color!? Tan/red color. I don't know what could have caused this... Though the first thing I did was take him out of the aviary, away from my other birds, just incase it's contagious... Please help! Any remedies? Daniel  [b]

If WPB has an emergency avian vet, I'd get him there tonight, Daniel. Doesn't sound good :( Hope I'm wrong. While searching for the vet, set a lamp as close to his cage as possible for heat and tonight, if he's not hospitalized, drape a heating pad around the end of his cage by his sleep perch. Be careful to drape it in a way he can't bite into.

    Sure hope he heals.

Thanks for you're advice Paca! I sure hope he does'nt give up on me  ! I've tried all kinds of things already, but nothing seems to work... I've even placed him in his old cage, and still nothing... I have'nt even seen him try his food today, except drink water... Do you think baby bird formula will work on him for tonight? Thanks again for you're time... P.S. "I feel terrible, he's cuddled himself inside a small hand towel on my lap..."

I'm surprised there's no emergency vet. Have you called several places to see if they know a clinic with an avian vet on staff? Food isn't tonight's priority -- it's vet care with bloodwork and probably antibiotics.

    My best, Paca

If you ever suspect that there is something wrong with your bird you should immediately take the bird to an avian vet to get diagnosed....

reddish stools? not good. It sounds like lead poisoning...I hope you find a vet asap. by the time i've noticed any of budgies was "off" it was too late.

    dead?

Postby bostonbudgie on Mon Feb 25, 2008 7:53 am

    The budgie died? :(
    How sad and frustrating...... :(
I am very vigilant in caring for my budgies but unfortunately, by the time I notice they are sick and rush them to the vet they are so week that they can't handle the meds or handling :(
The budgies that I had brought in for routine exams and their ie. bacteria level/yeast level was up and I gave them the appropriate meds when they looked "fine" are still with me.
