Laying eggs in food dish help

Postby birdsmommy on Tue Feb 05, 2008 7:01 pm

My budgie decided to lay an egg in her food dish. I removed the egg because I never seen her sitting on it.
we bought a breeder box for them so the 2 can continue ....
Well today i seen the female sitting in the food dish. to my surprise she was sitting on a egg.
what should I do???? why didn't they use the breeder box??

You may want to consider getting smaller food dishes and changing them every morning only putting enough food inside to las the day.

Do you have a male and female that are at least a year old? Are they on a healthy diet? Get plenty of exercise? Are you prepaired for emergencies incase something goes wrong?

I have a male an female both are over a year and a half. they get a very good diet. I also have a blue crown and a parrolette. So all the birds get a very well balanced diet. Have playgrounds for them also.
The parakeets get alot of excerise TILL i seen the egg didn't want to mess aroud with them. The male is very hand trained. he's my grandson's. told him not to get zebee out didn't want to mess up the breeding. would love to have babies.
Hand fed my blue crown. I did very softly lift the egg and put some of the bird nesting material under it. she pulled it all out and sits on the egg with nothing under it. Seeing her sitting in that small cp looks so funny.

If I keep changing the food dishes what happens with her egg?

If they have a nestbox you should try and encourage them to use it... if it's a must, put some safe shavings inside, but make the center empty, and put the egg(s) there. With any luck she may be interested in checking it out... you could also try putting food dishes and treats near the entrance to the nestbox.

She may end up abandoning the egg, or she might not... but generally speaking it's not recommended to allow a hen to sit on an egg in the "open" as they may not be able to keep the chicks as warm, or keep the humidity to a certain temp... and budgie hens may not accept nesting material until they have chicks...

What I can say is I ended up giving my finches back their little wicker basket i had hanging in ther cage because they kept laying in the dish, I would throw it away, which prompted her to lay another egg...and I got worried about her laying so many!
