Special Order Cages

Postby birdmom on Sun Jan 27, 2008 1:25 pm

Hope someone can lead me in the right direction. I am looking for a cage that measures somewhere around 40" wide x 20" deep and 20" high with a removable divider and is black. I have 2 birds (both male) that had an intense fight so I separated them. They had been together for several years. When I put them back together after a month or so, they got along well, and then had another skirmish. They were in a cage together that measured 20" high, 19" wide and 19" deep. So I thought twice as much space would be twice as good. The divider will help if they should have another fight. The closest I have found online is a breeders cage that measures 30" x 18" x 18" and it is white.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Why not just keep them in separate cages next to eachother??? And allow them out of cage time together?

Budgies, as with any other bird, tend to bicker. It's only natural. It becomes an issue when one is denied food/water, is being constantly picked on and chased around the cage, or when one starts bleeding.

The cages you have now though are pretty small. For two budgies you ought to look for something twice as big.

Here's a great sized cage for a great price! (cheaper considering how much smaller cages go for)

And if your lucky you can find someone who has one locally that they are willing to sell (search Craigslist for example)

Thanks for the lead on the cage. The size and price are great! Neither bird likes to leave the cage. They have their food, water, toys and music. Like you said, what they need is more space! Would it make sense to try to put them both in the comfort cage (Inside height 35" x 32" x 21") and see how that works. I hate to see them separated. They look for each other and talk back and forth constantly. They just can't seem to get along for very long in the smaller space. Alternatives would be to get 2 comfort cages or 1 double flight cage, which is like 2 comfort cages connected by a divider wall.

Given enough space and twice of everything (two food dishes, two water dishes, and two of everything else) they should do fine.... although they may also decide that it's not enough.

Usually though, with enough space two or more birds will get along... for example, I have 5 budgies, 1 bourke, and 6 cockatiels all living cage-free in an 11' x 14' room. The cherry head used to be cage free as well but she no longer is. I honestly wouldn't imagine trying to house them all in something such as a cage, even a double flight cage at that... as there just isn't enough room. But as it is now, they do fine other than some squabbles over food or perches.

So, you can try and put them in a much larger cage (once fully set up) at the same time and see how it goes.

MFids,
Thanks for the advice. I am ordering the larger cage and will fill it with lots of different perches and toys. Wish me luck! I really want to see them together. They used to get along fine.

My comfort cage arrived and I am getting it ready for the birds. It took a team of three to put it together, but it looks great! Hope the boys love it! Wish me luck! Monica (MFids), thanks for the recommendation.
