What is the proper bar spacing for parakeets?

Usually 1/2" to 5/8" for budgies.

I got some of those cages with a 1/2" bar spacing in white and I'm fixing to sell all 12 of them, I can't see the birds well enough.

I have 1/2" bar spacing and I have never had any problems. I used to have a white cage and also experienced difficulty seeing my birds. Now I have a cage with black bars and seem to have much better visibility. It makes me wonder if its color or spacing that matters more as far as visibility goes...

Bar spacing

Postby TheFrantom on Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:56 pm

I am not good with numbers, so this is how I figure bar spacing.

If a lady sticks her little finger into the bars of a cage and the finger only goes in up to the first knuckle -- the cage is OK for a keet or a finch.

If a lady's finger goes in up to the second knuckle -- the cage is OK for a cockatiel.

If the finger bypasses the second knuckle and goes in all the way into the bars -- the cage should be OK for a small conure.

For a bigger cage, measure the space between. :D

That is the best explination I have ever heard! That will come in handy when I am talking to people on the phone and they don't know their measurements.

Your comments are usually very good. Thanks for participating on this site! :o

Why thank you, 1chloe1....

I was afraid somone was going to tell me that was a stoopid idea...

Actually, I have been telling people about the finger trick for years too.
I am always afraid a new bird person is going to put a bird in an improper cage, bar-spacingwise. Too big the spacing, birds can get their heads caught or get out, too small the spacing is improper and uncomfortable for the bird.

But my all-time favorite is someone who want to put a keet in one of those wicker "house-style" cages -- only meant to put silk flowers and fake birds in. Even keets will chew their way out! (At a bird show once I tried to talk a lady out of buying one of those cages for her lovebird. She bought it anyway...)
