With some thought, I decided to take Kyle to the vet. I'm a bit nervous about giving him the scatt myself since it says it could be fatal if given too much. The vet isn't an avian vet but he knows things about birds. He knew what was wrong with him right away and said that he could make him better with a problem. I was so relieved. He gave him an injection. I didn't ask what it was but I'm assuming it was Ivermectin. He told me to take him back in 10 days and I will take my other budgie to him after Kyle is cured since she probably has it also. I feel bad for Kyle having to stay in the smaller cage but it has to be done until they're both cured completely. I'm so much happier now! :)

I'm glad you're not as lacking for vet resources as you thought. Please call back and ask what the injection was and request a copy of the exam record by mail. This is what a bird parront must do to keep the birds safe. And stay on bird chats so you'll learn more about your birds and have that additional resource next time. There's always a next time!

I hope both birds heal fast.

give your cage a thorough cleaning

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Oct 16, 2007 4:57 pm

Give your cage a thoprough cleaning. throw away cloth & woodend perches. Mites will harbor in things like that. Scrub the cage down DAILY not to reinfect......Yes, ask the vet what the injection was and anything else that needs to be done. Did you ask the vet about the other bird?

He did say that we should bring my other budgie in to be treated. I know that he has treated other birds around here since he'd been recommended by the owners of those birds. I will ask him what he injected but I'm sure it was something that will help the birds. It was probably ivermectin since that's used for dogs and cats as well and that's what they mainly have coming into that animal clinic.
Those mites only live on the bird and die when they come off so there shouldn't be a problem with any mites being left behind in the cage. He explained that to me and I've read it online also. I've already cleaned the cage and toys thoroughly after removing Kyle.

I think that ahlee was just suggesting the wd40 thing if seeing a vet was not a possibility. I've never heard of this treatment but I am not an expert. I think a lot of these old school remedies were found because back in the day, NO ONE took their parakeet to the vet. To be honest, I am not sure of the safety of many bird insecticides and drugs. They are considered an acceptable risk. Just because it it dispensed by your vet or through a catalog doesn't mean its not harmful to your birds. I suppose one option would be to call a vet or shop or expert and ask them what they thought about the WD40 thing.
