poor Pinkead

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Sep 18, 2007 1:39 pm

3 days ago Pinkead looked kind of sleepy. I let him rest and gave him some apple cider vinegar in his water. The next day, he seemed to be back to normal.
Yesterday, I found him at the bottom of the cage. He vomited whole seeds and only excreted urates. I rushed him to the vet. He was progressively going down hill. $300.00 later and on my ride home , poor little Pinkead died.
The rate of which he was going down hill I really didn't think he would make it but I was hoping. I had the vet take blood tests to see what the problem was so my other birds would not get sick. She couldn't get a fecal sample since Pinkead only excreted urates.
I hope to get the results today or at least tommorrow....
the vet had 3 cases of lead poisoning and we ran a lead poisoning test. i can not imagine lead poisoning since he did not red droppings(?)

I'm very sorry  It's so sad to lose a bird. My heart goes out to you.

I had a bird who was successfully treated for lead poisoning years ago. Her droppings were never red, and the vet never mentioned that as a symptom, FWIW. I wonder if your vet's cases reflect the tragedy of newer cages from China, filled with lead

Thanks Paca. I just received an email from my cousin regarding dog toys made from china that had toxic paint (lead). After thinking about that I started fine combing my bird toys. budgies love bells and mirrors. After looking at the mirror toys and some of the bells, the metal didn't look 'right' so I tossed them and replaced them with stainless steel bells.
I haven't heard the test results yet but I am on a mission to completely obsessively bird safe my bird toys. my cages are king's cages and hagen cages.
this lead paint issue from china makes me crazy. the US banned lead paint in the early 70's and here it is again....
jewelry made in india is loaded with lead too...

It's maddening  I hope the test results help you.

If anyone else is replacing bells, some good quality SS bells are available here:

partial test results

Postby bostonbudgie on Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:07 am

the blood tests came back as "kidney failure". It still doesn't tell me "why".
After a lengthy talk with the vet she thinks it could have been from a tumor (which I think) or still, toxins.I am still waiting the lead tests results.
I've contacted a birdsafe toy company for bird toys & parts
www.californiabirdnerds.com
I bought nearly $30.00 of supplies, even bird safe twine. I was shocked to find that some twine (you can buy a dollar stores/hardware stores) contain a toxic oil.
I bought stainless steel bells, little plastic chains, chew items etc...
*please budgie people check your toys :!:
