Finally got my budgie!

Postby Mercy4Free on Wed Sep 12, 2007 7:01 pm

I have been ready to get a parakeet for a while now, but was waiting until maybe the humane society had one or someone needed to rehome one. Checked Craig's list last night (usually don't) and there was someone with a parakeet that needed a new home! emailed and she brought him to my at the office this evening!

He is pretty.....only about a year old she said. Seems kinda small to me, but he is blue parakeet but he has what looks like royal blue jewels on his cheeks.

His name is Petey......mgiht change it, but haven't decided. Will post pics soon!

My advice, quarantine, for at least 30 days. Seperate room and hopefully seperate air supply. Feed, water and play with Pretty last so you don't carry any germs or viruses to your other birds.

Congratulations though!

For the simple fact that you don't really know the birds true health right now as it is... or that you don't know what living conditions he came from... Even if he hasn't been around other birds for 5 years there's still a chance he could be sick...

So true. Some diseases can sit in a "dormant" state for quite some time, and in times of stress, the disease can become "active". Some birds are carriers of disease and do not seem to suffer from it, so no matter the conditions of the birds, you need to quarantine the bird and have a "new bird/healthy bird" visit to the vet. It is expensive to do this when you are adding several to your flock, but essential. Think of the cost if this birdie is carrying something and the rest of your flock is infected.
