Green Cheek conure and parakeet

Postby Annie on Mon Sep 10, 2007 4:21 pm

Hello,

I just recently purchased my first Green Cheek Conure. I have a parakeet in the home as well. I was not able to find any reading material on how well the two will go together. I am of course keeping the new bird quarantined for 2 weeks and he will see a vet before they are exposed to one another.

Any advice to make sure these 2 can be friends or how to introduce them? Has anybody ever heard of them sharing a large cage together? Currently they are in 2 seperate cages but if there is a possibility of them living in harmony together down the road I would like to put them together.

Thanks for any advice!

Annie,

I normally hang out on Tiel Chat, but I dropped in here.

I would quarantine for at least 4 weeks. Some diseases don't show up in every test, and it is better safe than sorry.

I would personally keep two seperate cages for the birds. Their dietary needs are different and if the green cheek got grumpy one day while you weren't home, it could severely injur or kill your budgie. If they get along outside the cage, I would always supervise them.

After quarantine, you can put their cages in the same room and let them get used to each other from a distance. After that you can move the cages near each other so they can chat through the bars, but again, I would never cage them together.

As stated a min. quarantine is always 30 days for the reasons given.

It is NEVER a good idea to house mix species in the same cage.

If you have supervised play on a bird gym maybe that would be ok. However does not take long for damage to occur to one bird if someone gets out of sorts.
