Greasy Looking Feathers

Postby Addie on Sat Aug 04, 2007 7:47 am

Hi,

I've got a new pair of parakeets, one male, one female. They are about 6 months of age and 4 months of age respectively. They are both active and act and look quite healthy. The male, however has slightly less tidy lookng feathers and his feathers look just a little bit greasy. Otherwise he seems completely normal. Any ideas on what would clear this up? Could it be his diet or stress or is he just lazy when it comes to grooming? Any ideas are welcome.

Has he had a bath lately? Give them a shallow bowl of water to get a bath in.

Better yet, why don't you get a spray bottle and spray both birds with water. This is what we do to get our show birds ready for show. We spray them until they are drippy wet every day for 2 weeks up until the show day. At first you will notice it is quite easy to get them drenched. As the birds groom themselves it takes more of an effort to get them wet through.
