New fluffy baby

Postby shelnicole08 on Tue Jul 03, 2007 8:25 pm

Hi everyone! Im new to this forum but everyone seems to be helpful so I thought I might ask some questions. I got a new young budgie on Sunday from a local petsmart. I'de been calling all week, they got the new birds on friday and I watched them put them in the display cage on Sunday so I know its very young and hasnt had too much time with other birds. Heres the thing, I have an older budgie, about 2.5 years. vicious biter. Really healthy and energetic but would prefer me to keep my hands out of his business. I have the baby in a seperate cage but in the same room. is this a bad idea? will the baby pick up bad habits from the full flighted screaming biting budgie? I started putting my hand in babies cage today. He moves away from it but doesnt seem completely freaked out. ALSO, the baby sits completely fluffed up like all day. and with his eyes closed alot..? is this normal? I want to take them to the vet but im too scared that they will both be terrified of me after that and I will never get this little baby trained.. what does everyone think? sorry so long, im new to this.

Any new bird should be quarentined from the rest of your flock. This keeps your flock from getting any diseases the new bird is carrying. Kinda late now. I would take new bird to the vet. YOu usually have 72 hours to get to the vet (for health guarentee). Its either very young or could sick. A sick bird sits with its feathers fluffed up trying to keep warm. It could just be getting used to its new home. Keep putting your hands in the cage, maye pick it up and hold it. Talk to it softly and stroke it.
Do not be afraid to take it to the vet, they get over it.
