Budgie Feeding

Postby MFids on Tue Mar 13, 2007 10:22 pm

Currently I'm caring for 5 budgies, 2 or more which I may put up for adoption.... 3 of them are rehomes. Smurf is the only male, and he's a normal blue budgie. Sophia is a violet sky blue, and Georgia is a violet light green clearflight split pied. The other two, a recessive sky blue violet, and a dominant light green do not have names. They are all at least a year old if not older... with Smurf probably being the oldest at around 8 years and not showing his age! His previous owners had him since 1999, so he could be older!

None of them are tame, but for some reason, I've been feeding them from my hand first thing in the morning... I'm not sure why, as I don't really have a reason as to why... well, it started out by feeding them from their dishes, while I held the dishes (one long dish, two smaller half circle dishes hanging off the longer one) from one hand, on the outside of the cage, on Feb 28th. I quickly grew tired of this (within a matter of days) and started feeding them from my hand instead, while in the cage. After a couple days of this, I went to feeding them just outside the door from my hand.

I haven't been feeding them daily, in the mornings, from my hand, "religiously" since Feb 28th, as I did get sick for a while (and am still recovering). However, I've still been able to feed them from my hand lately.... wherein a few days ago I finally took some pics of it... and a video a few days before the pics...

Monday I had a friend who was having issues (thus feeling down in the dumps and also pissed/outraged), so I told them to feed the budgies. They thought I meant to remove the food dishes and refill them... but I had them sit down with the cage door open, and their hand filled with some seed. Budgies were more nervous since they aren't used to anyone, let alone strangers thus took a little time to come down and out to eat.... but I could tell that by them eating from my friends hand, it really cheered them up a little!

I enjoyed your photos of the budgies being hand-fed. I would say if your birds eat from your hand that they are tame.(or on their way of being tame especially if it consistant)That is one way to get them used to your hand by rewarding them with food.

They are such darlings! Only way I can get that close to my budgies is if I come bearing lettuce
