I Have Questions For English Budgie Owners~

Postby CrazyBirdLady on Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:18 am

Hello. I bought a pair of young English Budgie's. They are very rare down here in La. Anyway, I have never kept these birds before and I am not sure if I am doing the right things. They just don't do much. Smaller parakeets are very active. My English pair just seem to be happy to just sit there. Is this normal? Is there something wrong? They are also very quiet. I am not complaining about their silence (my husband sure likes it) but I need to know if this is normal for their breed. Is there anything else I can expect from the English Budgie???? Any advice??? :?:

hi crazybirdlady I was wonder where you were!
English budgies seem to be a little more subdued (at first) they will come around once they are comfortable.

Hi CrazyBirdLady!

I don't have anything to compare them with - I have always had English budgies since a child. Boo is the best English budgie that I have ever had. He's now 10 and a half years old. I suppose he's fairly quiet. They are prone to obesity - Boo is overweight, but he is the cutest love bug ever! I dunno how to attach photos here or I would. I would say let them settle in at their own pace - they are such lovely birds.

especially when I take his buddie, a dusky conure, out and about the house. I also find the males more vocal than the females.
To make them more active, I dont use feed bowls, but put their feed on the cage bottom. This way they have to leave their perches up high, climb down and search for it. I read that budgies in general are foragers and like to do this and it seems to work well for me.
This increases their activity.

And they do seem to be less active than their American counterparts.
