Budgies & Conures

Postby kalloo on Tue Jan 30, 2007 12:31 pm

I have a Crimson Bellied Conure about 6 months old. We have just acquired two very young budgies. They all seem happy to look at each other through the various cage bars. However, come Summer we will be building a large flight cage/aviary.
Question - can I put Pujah, the Conure, in with George & Gracie in this aviary?
Pujah has an awfully large beak and the budgies seem very tiny.
If anything were to happen I might not get to them in time. Pujah isn't aggressive, but she is quite capable of nipping when she feels the need arises.
Thanks for any advice
Caryl PS I posted this on the Conure chat board as well.

I wouldn't if I valued the life of my budgies.

Budgies & Conures

Postby kalloo on Tue Jan 30, 2007 1:05 pm

That was my first thought too. But I have heard of Budgies and Conures - which are quite small - living happily together.
However, unless someone tells me that they've done it and it's safe, then George & Grace will have a separate outdoor aviary.
Thanks for the reply.

I wouldn't try it

The only way you can find out if you try it.
I certainly would NOT.....
I had two pretty docile iguanas. One of my budgie LOVED to fly in their cage and 'groom' them.
One day I heard this awful scream. One of the igs had the budgie in her mouth.I rushed the budgie to the emergency vet. He was lucky that a blood feather was the only thing broken....
just my 2 cents worth...

Done it for years and its great......

my dusky conure, Georgie, and Buffy the budgie are best of friends.

Previous to that Georgie was in with a family of budgies and they were all great together.

I did have a very large aviary style cage though so they all had room and space of their own. No crowding.
Heck one of the females even had babies and Georgie was cool with that too and so was she. (Though she did have to tell him NOT TO GO IN AND FEED THE CHICKS LIKE CONURE MALES DO.) lol...THAT WAS so funny when that happenned. She really gave him heck.

Georgie is the type to get along with any bird so I have never had a problem.

I also put them into the larger cage at the same time so neither one had already claimed it as only their territory.

I have just one budgie that is Ok with one cockatiel. the budgies can be bullies themselves. I've had on occasion some budgies who were the best of pals turn on each other. Two fatal never-saw-it-coming seemingly unprovoked attacks. Conures are very strong birds. I still wouldn't try it....
