Non-stick pans - Are they really dangerous for birds

Postby Mountain Birds on Thu Jan 04, 2007 4:49 pm

I keep hearing mixed reports that I must throw our my non-stick pans now that we own parakeets. Is this true?

No, it's not true that you must throw them out. You'd be wiser to give them to someone with no birds or children in the home. Though the chemicals that make cookware non-stick (PTFE) is also a carcinagen harmful to adults, it's far more dangerous to smaller bodies, especially birds'. Here's where we discussed the reasons and good alternatives a few weeks ago: viewtopic.php?t=11703&start=0

I hope you realize the danger before your birds pay the highest possible price.

Please do not use them (even if not in the same room with the budgies) the fumes from an overheated pot can and will kill your babies.

never on high heat, only MEDIUM and do not let them sit and cook on the stove long before you put food in, then you will be ok. Always use the 'fan' with them.

I only have a frying pan, as I find the others are really not necessary.

When one of these pans are too hot you can see the fumes rising from them.

I have used these pans for yrs with birds in the home without any problems, but I am very careful and the kitchen is very well ventillated.

Ideally it is better if none are used near or around birds, but alas we all live in the real world and I am not willing to scrape pans, so I have one.

Good luck, Georgie
