Get a small travel cage for in the car. Put in a low perch. Not much water mainly fruit (orange and grapes) for liquid. If you can, stop occasionally to give the bird a rest. Its hard for them to hold on and try to eat. I've taken my 3 budgies (and my big guys) on a lot of trips. We went to Maine whick was 12 hours one way. The only one that really had trouble was my female with only 1 leg.
I usually cover part of the cage. This way lights or trees going by doesn't startle them as much. I always use a seat belt to secure the cage.
Any other questions please ask.

and trust me...cars are much easier than planes. Last time I flew with my budgies, I had a fairly long discussion with the airport screeners who wanted me to take my two budgies out of the cage and carry them through the "gate" with me. Finally took a couple of supervisors to agree that maybe they did not want budgies loose in Newark airport. Guess it was the first time they had dealt with feathered, rather than furry, travelers. Was also great fun on the plane cuz nobody could figure out who was making those strange noises when everyone was sleeping!
