2 Rescues, I'd like some info

Postby mallagoodee on Wed Jan 11, 2012 7:57 am

I just rescued, (temporarily for 6 months), 2 'budgies' from a retirement home my mother resides in. The poor creatures were being tormented and not being cared for, IMHO, properly.

They look awfully small when I compared 'em to Budgies in the pet store ... could this be a different variety of parakeet?
Talking with a resident of the home, she said the birds came here about a year and a half, or 2 years ago and they were about 4 or 5 weeks old at the time.
These two birds are afraid of people, and I would like to know how to socialize 'em.
I don't think they've ever flown out of their cage ... I leave the door open and each one has ventured out, only to fly very erratically.
One bird has dark bluish toe nails, their beaks are a bluish colour too, as well the area just above their beaks.

I have one very tame Cockatiel and had hoped that seeing Bailey fly around would encourage these 2 birds to be comfy outta the cage too.

Do you have any suggestions as to the health of the birds based on this very little info?
And to 'socialize' 'em, is it just patience or can I co-erce them somehow to trust me?

Thanx alot
Pete

Yes. There is the normal/pet type of budgies which typically weigh around 30 grams and then there's the english/exhibition variety of budgies that way 50-60+ grams. They are the same species, however the larger type were bred from the normal type via selective breeding. When bred together, you can have a much wider range of sizes and weights.

I would suggest try feeding the millet from your hands without staring at them directly. It will take time, but if you allow them to come to you, you can have a much friendlier bond.

Health wise, it's hard to say as we are not vets and we don't know their history of diet and care. They might be in excellent shape, or they might not be. They would need to be taken to an avian vet to determine how healthy they are. (cost would start at $40-$200+ per bird, depending on what's done ) That said, a healthy diet goes a long ways to a healthier bird, and a seed only diet, irregardless of all the coloring's and additives, is not a healthy diet.

Hi I naturally agree with the above advise but would just like to add that Budgies

come in all sizes. The very small ones are often referred to as runts by breeders

& discarded....I suggest that you have their wing feathers clipped. Hopefully by

the time they regrow the birds will more friendly & keep up with the proper diet.

Birds kept in classrooms & care homes are usually fed on seed alone....Yours B. J.

I would second the already mentioned observation that the "pet" parakeets sold in pet stores for about $20 are much smaller than the Budgies bred for showing. One obvious contrast is the appearance, with the biggerBudgies having bushier head of feathers. You probably have the pet parakeet version, which are generally more hardy and live a few years longer than their larger counter parts due to inbreeding early on to get desired result for showing purposes. I had a hen of the pet type that was crazy small but was very healthy and could sit a clutch every six months.

I also agree that great way to socialize them would be to use millet seed by holding in your hand and letting them eat. It sounds like you enjoy having your birds flighted, but once they are comfortable leaving the cage a wing clipping can work wonders during hand taming.

Thanx very much all!
I just hung some Romaine lettuce leaves and they are devouring 'em ... I've also tried some sweet potato and apple slices.
Tomorrow, broccoli!

Thanx again

Shame poor birds, good for you for taking them in. I just as much hate seeing them in classrooms, stuck in their tiny cages day in day out to go home on weekends with a different kid, in and out of (quite often, a hot!) car :(
