Suggestions on getting my birds used to us?

Postby pygora on Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:55 am

I recently got 2 parakeets (within the last month or so) and I'd like some tips on where to start getting them used to us. Is there anything I can start with? Every time we try to get near them they mad flap all around the cage and tweet like mad. Other than feeding/watering and playing music and talking to them I have no idea what to do. I've tried putting my fingers near them but they get soo scared they don't stay put. I've tried millet too. Any tips on how to make friends? :-)

Have you tried feeding them millet/seeds from your hands? This usually works best first thing in the morning before they've had a chance to eat. You offer the treat right at the door of the cage, inside, and allow them to go to you. Try not to stare directly at them, and leave your hand there for 5-15 minutes or as long as you can. If they aren't interested, offer them their regular food and try again the next day. It may take a few days for them to feel comfortable enough with you to do so, but don't worry! Just give it time.

After several weeks or months of doing that, they may enjoy eating from your had more than from their own dish, and may come to expect the behavior every day. When I did this with budgies, they were happily flying out of their cage to my hand to eat. With the tiels, they would follow me around the room waiting for me to feed them, as I was filling up their regular dishes! Once their dishes were down, I'd put food in my hand that they'd happily eat from! And these are not tame tiels that you can easily get them to step up.

They will get used to you if you spend a little bit of time with them every day. Try to not make any sudden movements . Try to feed them or clip their wings so you can handle them and tame them. :D
