How do I tell if my 1 parakeet is female/male?

Postby pygora on Tue Sep 13, 2011 7:53 pm

I just recently got 2 parakeets. 1 I'm positive is male cause it's got a blue cere but the other 1 I'm not sure about because its got a pale bluish color to it. Can anyone look at the pic attached and see which it is?

You have a male and female. Males should have a pure blue/purple cere or a pink cere. Hens can have white, white with blue/tan, tan and brown. Hens can have no blue or a lot of blue on their ceres, but the ceres typically remain different than a males. A males cere is usually glossy/shiny, where-as a hens is not.

Below is a picture (cut and crop) of a male and female budgie. You can see how their ceres differ.

Ok so females can have a slightly pale blue on them. I was worried that I had gotten 2 males. :-) I didn't know for sure if the one was just a young male or not being slightly blue tinged. They do sound different. I had a chance to sit down and listen to them. The one kind of whistles but the other kind of does a raspy chirping. Sounds like she's telling the guy off. LOL I was trying to let them get used to our household and not messing with them too much but they finally seem to be settling in. I was starting to get worried about the food/water but I saw they were down there eating together today so I think they're doing that when we're mostly not around to watch. The blue one I was 100% positive was male but the other one I needed a 2nd opinion since I don't know parakeets yet. I formerly had cockatiels.

    Sounds like typical male/female behavior!

A lot of birds might not eat much, and especially may not eat much in front of anyone in a new home because their entire world has just changed and they are afraid. They usually start eating after 1-2 days, but if they aren't eating by the 3rd day then there may be an issue. When taking in new birds or caring for sick birds, it's always a good idea to make sure that food is accessible to them in dishes as well as food/treat right next to a perch that they can easily reach.

Male budgies do the typical singing, head bobbing, eyes pinning, beak tapping, etc. They might even raise their foot up against something.

Hens typically chirp and, well to put simply, bitch or scream at whatever is pissing them off! Males can make the same sound, although typically not as frequently as the hens. Likewise, the hens can act like males and display to each other, but again typically not as often as the males!

I don't currently have any budgies, but I find their antics quite amusing! Best of luck with these two!
