Hyper Behavior??

Postby Fishy on Tue Jun 01, 2010 10:37 am

I'm hoping someone can help me out. I just recently got a blue parakeet/budgie about a week and a half ago. He's doing fairly well getting acclimated to his new environment, however he seems to get agitated at times. He will contort himself into weird positions, such as when his feet are gripping the bars of the cage wall, he will duck his head under one leg until his back/wings are against the wall, and typically rub his head against the cage wall. When he is out of his cage, he enjoys sitting by the sliding door of the kitchen. He likes to sit on the ledge, and often runs rapidly up and down the ledge usually bopping his head in circular motions. I used to have a parakeet years ago, and can't remember him acting the same way. He seems to be somewhat hyper? Is this normal behavior?

Sounds normal to me! Some budgies are just quirky! Wish I had a picture of it! Had one hen who would climb up to the top corner of the cage, one foot clutched to the side of the cage, the other clutched to the top. She would then tuck her head between her legs and rest in what appears to be quite an uncomfortable position! Iv'e heard stories of a few budgies who even enjoyed going to sleep hanging upside down!

The 'bopping' behavior sounds like possible regurgitation. Would have to see a video to perhaps see the behavior you describe.

How adorable! Yes, that behavior is definitely normal. My Zyler does all kinds of goofy stuff like that and all she's doing is playing and being silly, and probably trying to get me to ooh and aah over her  (which I usually do).

As far as the head bopping, yes it is a movement they do when regurgitating food for their mates and their young but they will also feign the regurgitation/bopping movement as kind of a social behavior. Birds are social creatures to begin with, and budgies are among the most social birds on earth, so this movement does seem to happen often, especially when you have a playful little guy like that. He sounds like a silly little cutie to me!

Nah. It's easier just to use the report button feature to notify the mods/admins of said user and let them deal with it. This way, they know about it immediately, instead of it slipping by. Once the post has been reported (as I just did), it cannot be reported again, at least not until it has been dealt with.

The "member" has made more than one post, so I can only assume that the posts were deleted and nothing done about the member. Here's hoping someone will shortly!

Off the cabinet door discussion and back to your bird. Sounds perfectly normal to me, mine do the craziest things just to get my attention. Good luck with your new friend.

I've deleted several of these posts. I'm talking to Kirsten to find out what kind of further action will be taken, if any. I'm leaving them until I hear from her.

    ETA:
I haven't heard from Kirsten yet, but I deleted the posts. Since the system doesn't notify me, if I miss a reported post, please send me a PM so I can deal with it. The user has been warned, hopefully this will be the end of it.
