Birds in Greenhouse

Postby lorne on Thu Jan 07, 2010 7:09 pm

Hi,

I have a greenhouse 12' * 16' and want to put a few budgie, finches and canaries in it. I live on West Coast, in winter we get a few nights where it gets below freezing but not many, and in summer will get a hot spell where it gets into the 90's. There will be a vent to let hot air out but because the green house is about 80% glass I am not sure if that will do much good. There is to be lots of water and plants and middle sized shrubs so there will be shade and moisture. Question I have will the weather be too cold or too hot for them to remain in there all year?

If the birds live in a greenhouse, will they have a way to keep warm on nights that it gets too cold? Or a way to keep cool on days it gets too hot? Birds, if acclimated, can tolerate a wide range of temperatures as long as they have ways to keep warm or keep cool.

Are all of the plants inside the greenhouse safe to be chewed on? Any water in the greenhouse deep enough to drown in? What about concerns of the birds not being able to see the glass/side/roof panels and flying into them?

I really can't answer your questions, only give you more things to wonder yourself and ask yourself about! It's not something I would recommend, personally, and I don't know of anyone who has, but you never know...

Not a good idea, way too easy for a bird to break a neck flying into a glass wall.

    Probably too much humidity.
I've seen society finches and zebra finches in hothouses, and no problems,
but it's either once specie or the other, not both together.
Japanese quail might do well on the floor, but not the smaller
    button quail.
