How to find a good breeder?

Postby conure99 on Tue Jan 05, 2010 5:28 pm

I'm new to this board... I lost my wonderful little budgie Pippin about a month ago, at just 7 years old. He was very, very sweet, active, playful, mischevious, an amazing talker... in short, the perfect bird (no offense to my GCC who I adore). He was never caged during the day, and enjoyed doing laps around the house in the evening... though he was always more than happy to fly over when called. The only problems I ever had with him were the inevitable health issues, seems he had a new tumor/xanthoma pop up about once a year for his last few years. Despite that, he was always very active and cheerful up until his last few weeks.

I have been wanting to get another budgie for awhile, but I have been unable to find ANY budgie breeder who attempts to breed budgies that are less tumor-prone. I would assume no breeder would actually breed from a bird with a tumor of course, but it seems like the tumors may not show up until the budgies are old enough to have been breeding for a couple years. I can find no breeder that actually keeps records for a couple generations to selectively breed for longer lived budgies.
Does anyone here know of any such breeder? It seems like there should be some breeders that work on this.
I adore budgies soo much, but I'm getting discouraged... I've been thinking of getting a healthier species such as another GCC or a linnie... but what I really want is a budgie.

Most exhibition budgie breeders (English budgies) keep pedigree records on their birds.
YOu would need to go through one of the national societies to find a breeder.
If you are in the U.S. I am the BAA (Budgerigar Association of America) Membership Secretary.
I might be able to help you find a breeder "near" you PM me.
