Breeding Question

Postby Schlady on Mon Aug 17, 2009 12:21 pm

I have a pair of English budgies that are over a yr old. I am possitive they are male and female. I have them in a big flight cage with a nest box. I feed them a high quality seed. pellet. & fresh greens, fruit. veggies. Also add petamine to there seeds. They have not even shown any signs of breeding. They check out the nest box daily, but no courtship? I know there breeding cycle in the wild begins in Oct. Should i wait and see? Should i add another pair? Also i read that if you have a grate at the bottom of the cage to remove it. Does a grate Really make a difference, on whether they breed or not? Or is it just for saftey reasons when they have chicks?

Thanks!

The breeding cycle in Australia means nothing to your birds who live with you in Florida. Breeding season for them would be duirng our Spring/Summer seasons, and for some species, perhaps even in fall. However, kept inside with controlled lighting (not natural lighting and daylight hours) and temperature, they can breed year round. It's not a good idea to allow them to breed more than twice a year.

Do you have pictures of the pair? Budgies are usually said to breed best when there are other pairs around who are also breeding, however many pairs will breed without other budgies within the vicinity.

I haven't heard of removing the grate during breeding season, and many breeders do have cages with grates or wire bottoms. If worried you could put something above the grate but below the nestbox entrance as a precaution.

I would suggest getting two males, because those are both females!!!! That would probably explain the lack of courtship! Nice cage, btw!

You know..... After looking at them the other day I thought that was the case. The 1 i thought was a male ( which up until a month or so ago was mostly blue on cere) is now changing to a light blueish tan, with brown above. DUH!!!!!! So thank you for writting & letting me know i have 2 girls. No wonder no courtship lol. Thanks for your comment on the cage! I am now in the search for 2 males. Know of any good breeders in The orlando Fl area?

    Thank you

    Can't say that I do!

As for the ceres, hens can have blue ceres - however their ceres are usually white and blue, where-as a males should be completely blue. The amount of blue a hen has on her cere can vary.

Here's pictures of one hen - I bought her with a completely dark crusty brown cere, but shortly after bringing her home, she lost the outer crusty brown --- in time though, it turned back to the tan then crusty brown

And a mature males cere for comparison
