What should i do???

Postby jack on Sat Jul 11, 2009 7:11 am

I have 2 budgies a female and a male. My female is bigger than my male. With the advantage of her size she bullies him :x . Should i get another budgie or should i continue to seperate them. The problem is when i seperate them and bring them back together she starts pushing him and biting him and throwing him for no reason  . What should i do please tell me. :?

Until you get reliable advice from a budgie-knowledgeable source, I hope you'll keep them separated. It's been 15 years since I had budgies, so my experience is old and my memory poor, but I've read too many times of female budgies killing other budgies. I don't think your male is safe. Please protect him while you wait for the best advice.

Hate to say it but it sounds like typical female behavior.... females are the aggressors while the males tend to be more laid back. Don't get me wrong, I've seen an "aggressive" male before, but for the most part, they just don't stand up to the hens... in more sense than one! And more often than not, they put up with it!

If you don't have the two in a large cage (at least 2' D x 3' W x 2' H or bigger) then keep them separated. If you've got a large cage for them to be in, make sure there are two food dishes, 1-2 water dishes, and *A LOT* of perches!

If that doesn't work, and the hen is still being overly bullyish, keep them separated.

I agree with you she is really agressive so i will keep them seperated for longer times it is just after 1 day or so when i bring them back together she continues what she always does. I have one more question would it help alot to get another budgie like a male???

I can't easily answer that question because there's no telling how the birds will react when you add in more birds.

Just because you have 2 birds does NOT mean they will be fast friends. Just like people birds - ESPECIALLY hens - are particular who they care to “hang out with.”

If a hen does not care for a cock you have chosen, DO NOT KEEP THAT COCK IN HER CAGE. If you do there is a very good chance you will come home one day to a blood bath. Hens are know to kill cocks they don’t like.

From my experience, I would definitely separate them. Females can be quite nasty
