Missing feathers

Postby Skittlizme on Mon Mar 23, 2009 12:28 pm

I have 3 parakeets that are young, but appear to be female. They are all in the same cage, and have been for about 4 months now. Within the last week, they have been losing feathers off of their faces. All three of them are having this problem. They are not puffed up and I cannot see any mites on them after searching. I haven't seen them fighting at all, but I am not always home. Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be?

I had one male budgie that when he'd go through a molt, he looked like crap! He would have bare spots right on his forehead and a crud load of pin feathers. However, once he was done molting, he was perfect again!

So it could be molting... could also be rubbing the head feathers off..... or perhaps overpreening from the other birds. Got any pics?

Whook goes through that as well. The pins even look bloody. He will rub his face against the cage because it is itchy. The bare spots with pins coming in almost look like wounds. I would say what you are going through is normal.

I don't have any pictures of them, but they're all just missing a lot of feathers. Luckily there is no blood. Is it possible they are all 3 molting at the same time?
