macaw breeding ?

Postby hugs3005 on Fri Jun 13, 2008 7:37 am

I have a pair of hahns macaws that I got from someone and I have had them now for a good 3-4 months I would say. I have had a box on the cage for a good 2-3 months now and nothing is happening. I have the cage in my bedroom, which is the quietest room in the house, since we just sleep there lol. no one goes there during the day. But still nothing. Was told it was a proven pair. Any suggestions, I have never bred macaws before and not sure if I am providing the right environment for them. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I would say 3-4 months is a little soon to expect eggs. You need to give them more time to settle in.

ok I kinda figured that, but is there anything that I am doing wrong, or something I should do for them? They are in a cage PLENTY big enough, with some perches, no toys, plenty of food water.

All of my breeders have toys to play with and especially the macaws as they love to chew up wood. So please don't expect them to just sit there all day with nothing to do to keep them happy. If breeding birds was easy then we would all be millionaires with lots of money from birds, but breeding birds is not as easy as you might think. Some pairs I have owned for as long as 8 years before I have seen my first egg from them. Most people will give up by then and sell the pair thinking that there is something wrong with them. You didn't say whether you have any sort of vita lite for this pair that is in your bedroom? Vita lites are important in a house where the birds have no access to sunlight. I use to do my indoor birds with these lights and they were on a timer so that they came on at 7 in the morning and went off around 9 at night. This was their controlled daylight. I also fed food that would entice them to breed. Pellets, nuts and veggies as well as fruit depending on the species and no sunflower seeds. The pair has to be comfortable with their surroundings, their nestbox and ecah other before breeding will occur. Also some birds are seasonal and once Spring has come and gone they are done for the year. My major mitchells did their thing from March to May and then they were done for the rest of the year. Others produce all year round and so now you have a litlle bit of an idea as to what is happening and you will have to learn as you go. All pairs are different and you could have 30 pairs of birds and during one breeding season maybe only five pairs produce for you. I have learned to be happy with the five pairs and maybe the next year some of the others will produce. This year out of 12 pairs I have had no babies, but some will produce towards the end of Summer as they don't produce when it is hot out where I live. I just go with this and I feed them and keep them supplied with toys to keep them stimulated.

thanks for the reply. I am not sure how old they are, though I know they are of breeding age. There cage is right next to a window and there is another window next to that. I feed them a mix of seed, nuts, dried fruits etc.. and they get fresh fruits and veggies at least once a day. Since having them by the window, I didn't think I would need artificial lighting. As for the toy situation, where they came from, they had no toys, and he told me not to give them to them, cause they are breeders. I know quite a few people who don't offer toys to breeders. I was going to do toys, but he told me not to. They have a few wooden perches and they don't chew on them, nor there wooden nest box, its wierd, cause I read they are chewers, I expected them to be chewed up by now. Anyway, sounds like I am doing everything ok, cept having toys in there ;)

Window glass is treated to filter out the rays your birds need for vitamin D. If it's a double-hung window left open, it's still hard for sunlight through the screen to touch a bird in most cages.

It does sound like your environment is okay. However, toys are a definite must for your bird's well being. Imagine how boring it would be day by day just sitting in a cage. Macaws are very intelligent, even the small versions, and can become pluckers if not mentally challenged. I bred birds for 20 years and ALL my pairs had toys. Guess what? I also had production! I know you realize the importance of toys due to your last post, but just wanted to give my opinion.
    Good luck!
